What’s New
Version 1.6.0
RealityScan 1.6 is now available.
What's new:
New Scanning Modes
There are two scanning modes you can start your projects with now.
The default configuration is set to always ask which mode you would like to start a project with - you can change the default mode in Settings.
- Augmented Reality Mode
This is the original mode of RealityScan. It provides a real-time point cloud and displays camera positions to guide you during the scanning process. However, in this mode, camera settings cannot be adjusted.
- Camera Control Mode
This new mode offers full manual control over your camera settings, allowing you to adjust focus, shutter speed, ISO values, white balance and flash.
However, note that this mode does not include the real-time point cloud or camera position overlay. Here’s how each feature works:
- Focus and Shutter Speed: Manually adjust focus or shutter speed using the sliders. Alternatively, tap on the screen to select an area, then press the lock icon to fix the focus or exposure (shutter speed + ISO) for that area.
- White Balance: Adjust the color temperature by using a reference card (gray or white is recommended for better accuracy). Confirm the adjustment to set the white balance.
- Flash: You can turn the flash on or off while capturing images. For consistency, it’s best to keep the flash either on or off throughout the entire scanning session. Flash is particularly useful for evenly lighting your subject or separating it from the background.
By choosing the appropriate mode, you can tailor your scanning experience to match your needs whether you prefer real-time guidance or advanced manual controls for precision photogrammetry.
New Processing Options Panel
The new Processing Options Panel provides a clearer overview of your project and offers additional customization options for processing.
Here's what you can do:
- Picture Thumbnails
View a quick preview of the photos you’ve captured for your project.
- Mesh Resolution
Choose between two resolution settings for your 3D model:
Normal: Generates a mesh with up to 100,000 polygons.
High: Generates a mesh with up to 1 million polygons.
- Mesh Filtering
Refine the appearance of your mesh by selecting one of these filtering options:
Smooth: Creates a more uniform and polished mesh surface.
Detailed: Produces a rugged and intricate mesh, ideal for objects with fine details.
- Maximum Texture Resolution
Select the highest resolution for your model's texture:
4K: Standard high resolution for most use cases.
8K: Ultra-high resolution for detailed textures and close-up visual fidelity.
Remember: texture sharpness directly depends on the quality of your photos.
Ensure that all your pictures are sharp and free of blur to achieve the best results.
Ratings and Reviews
Doesn’t accept remote release
It does work well for creating a model but seems to have a lot to be developed. Especially when you are taking photos in a long distance, you will face an issue because it doesn’t accept the remote release, usually “Volume up” signal is used through a Bluetooth connection. Hope this function will be added in the next version.
Underwhelmed
Maybe it was the hoopla with the epic games purchase, or the massively delayed roll out, but I expected so much more. I use another paid app which also processes in the cloud, but the resulting model is available to export directly to my phone in any format, yet that is hardly the deal breaker. The deal breaker is that with half the amount of images, in WORSE lighting conditions, the other app blows the results from RealityScan out of the water. I mean, so far, I wouldn’t use a single result from this app versus the other, and the one time purchase was clearly worth it. I’m not naming the other app so I don’t come across as some paid shill, which should tell you everything you need to know. This app needs serious work. The cropping alone is insufficient, which requires that the ground be included as part of the scan, whereas several other apps allow you to literally erase all parts of the scene/model you do not want and then recenters and orients correctly. That’s a small issue compared to other complaints I have. Please go back to the drawing board and charge if you have to. Look at some of the other photogrammetry apps for inspiration, you desperately need it.
I LOVE this app and use it for pro stuff
I’m an Unreal Engine Technical Artist who creates new short films and virtual production tools for other real-time creators weekly and this app is absolutely a part of my pipeline. What I scan is never my final product. It’s a fantastic starting point. It’s a scan that’s fast, easy and extremely shareable with others. Whether I’m using it to scan toys and rig them so I can animate them or if I’m scanning a piece of furniture at a store, so I can see what it would look like in my house, I constantly find new uses. I am seeing a lot of bad reviews, but I am not seeing a lot of outside of the box thinkers. This is different. Sure, there are other apps that can scan, but this is just different. I don’t work for epic, nor do I have any special interest to make this look better than the rest but I personally love this app and it’s only going to get better. Congrats on the launch team! I can’t wait to see how it progresses.
