THE LONG VERSION:
Code Editor is a text editor with syntax highlighting, clips, find replace, the works. But it also has a full file manager, allowing you to work with files locally or remotely. It has a cool keyboard with context keys and an amazing super loupe to set your cursor. It manages 'sites' so you can quickly get to work, and it'll even sync those sites. It'll preview your pages, of course. And we've also thrown in a full-featured SSH terminal. It's an incredible app.

SITES. The foundation of Code Editor: create a site for each of your projects, local or remote, and quickly get to the files you need to edit. Better still, use our free Panic Sync service to sync these sites with our Mac apps, securely and quickly.

FILES. We've been building file managers for a really long time — we've got this. Local, remote, or any mix of the two. Edit, rename, duplicate, create folders, upload, download, you name it, you got it.

EDITING. Tap a file to land in our highly-optimized text editor, which syntax highlights your code with ease. Now, try this: move the insertion point. Whoa. That's the Super Loupe, magnifying magic we think is the best way to precisely set your cursor.

CLIPS. Have a handful of code bits you re-use a lot? Tap the clips icon in Code Editor, and load them in. Now you can insert them with a single tap.

FIND / REPLACE. Let’s say you accidentally inverted the values of your width and height tags. With our find and replace banner — and its breakthrough wildcard button — you can easily replace or swap or re-arrange your text.

TERMINAL. Really? Like, a full-featured SSH client built-in? Sure! Not only is it great value for your money, but it's also great help to getting your work done. Connect to your sites with a tap, and get the full-featured spot-on emulation of Prompt.

TABS. Quickly switch between your open documents. I know, it's obvious. But still.

CONTEXT KEYS. We've added a special section to your iOS keyboard that gives you the most useful, helpful special characters, automatically. It takes a lot of the pain out of writing code on a piece of glass.

We've put a desktop-class amount of work into Code Editor. It's truly a pro app. But, it's not hard to learn. And most amazingly, you're getting an incredible amount of power at a killer price.

Help support Panic, so we can continue to make great iOS professional tools. Buy Code Editor today!

Editors’ Notes

Backed by a beautiful, clutter-free interface, Coda is an astonishingly powerful editor for coding HTML, Java, Perl, and much more. And with its deep suite of tools—including a snappy built-in FTP transfer client—it can be an absolute lifesaver for software engineers, web developers, and anyone else who needs to code on the go.

Great App... But Nagware?

I love this app. But for $25 (I mean, really, TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS!?!?) I expect the developer to enjoy my money, confident in the fact that I like the product enough to pay $25 for it... instead of popping up a "Please Rate Us" window Every. Single. Time. I open the app. Therefore, 1 star. Great app, but extremely disrespectful of paying customers.

Edit to add... I did submit an email to the developer as requested. After two weeks, I have not gotten a response. And now Coda is harassing me to review it again. Every single time. So I will reiterate my one star review. And the suggested setting to turn off in-app ratings isn't on my device because I haven't upgraded to iOS 11 yet. This is a premium app at a premium price. I expect better. If it were $0.99 I would be more forgiving.

Edit 12/3 in response to developer... iOS 10.3 introduced the developer API to allow in-app ratings. But the user shut off setting was not introduced until iOS 11. That said, the new API is supposed to limit review requests to 3 per year or 1 per year if a review is left. So either Panic has implemented this API improperly or Apple has a bug in its API. I guess I'll upgrade to iOS 11 soon enough. I'm just waiting for a release of it that isn't completely filled with bugs. Seven bug fix releases for iOS 11 in less than 3 months isn't inspiring confidence for me.

Developer Response ,

You definitely should not in any way be asked to review every time you launch the app! Can you e-mail support@panic.com so we can look into this? We're using Apple's new built-in review prompt, so we actually have no control when the pop-up shows up! But you can turn off the pop-ups in ALL apps by going to Settings > iTunes & App Store and unchecking "In-App Ratings & Reviews"! Still, e-mail us please!

*** UPDATE 12/2 *** The "In-App Ratings and Reviews" control I mention above was added in iOS 10.3, which is when the function was added. So even though you're not on iOS 11, you should still be able to disable it for all apps! Do it now! Apple says "the actual display of a rating/review request view is governed by App Store policy", so again, we have ZERO control over when it appears and we DEFINITELY do NOT want it showing up every single launch! That must be insanely annoying. :(

Some great, some bad.

The idea is great and many parts of this are great. But there are missing bits. E.g., this still doesn’t support the iOS file manager, which is baffling. The built in file manager is surprisingly fiddly to navigate around in, which is too bad because this can make various kinds of remote connections which is really handy. And there are various bugs: the ssh client —mostly great — shifts itself left regularly so it gets partly cut off (you have to close the terminal window and open a fresh one). The find-and-replace is bugged. It seems to be searching an older version of the file. It makes it hard to, e.g., reliably change a symbol from one name to another because you can’t rely on “find” to find things.

This app could really use some TLC, but it doesn’t look like it’s getting much.
