ezAlmanac 1980's for Training is offered as a low cost resource to use for celestial navigation training. This version provides immediate access to Nautical Almanac Years 1980-1989, the supporting Nautical Almanac tables, and all 6 volumes of HO-229 Sight Reduction tables. The 1980's are used in celestial navigation training programs including USCG and US Navy. The year 1973 is also provided to support the pre-loaded sight reduction example from the included HO-229 introduction.

In-App purchases can be used to add additional almanac years, or purchase a full unlock to upgrade it to the equivalent of ezAlmanac Pro.

NEW FEATURE - We want to help you make the step from using the app to finding your fix by hand. You can now print blank sight reduction and plotting forms right from the app. In addition, when you export sight data from the app it is now displayed on the plotting and sight reduction forms to show you how it is done.

Celestial navigation has never been easier! With ezAlmanac and a sextant you will be finding your fix like a pro in no time! ezAlmanac will help you perform celestial navigation exactly as it has been done for over 100 years. It produces all Nautical Almanac (1961-2059) and Pub. 229 tables exactly as you are used to seeing them in the printed form. All tables can be accessed directly for manual usage if you choose to do so. Since they are produced by the software they support zooming and panning, and you can highlight in the tables to easily find the values you are looking for.

Most users, however, will prefer to let ezAlmanac do all of the work. Simply enter the basic sight parameters, make and enter your observations, and ezAlmanac will do the rest. It performs all of the steps to correct your observation, find GP of the object, do the sight reduction, and plot the LOP. No steps are skipped and all details are shown. Drag the marker to where the LOPs cross in the plot and you have found your fix!

Celestial navigation instructors love ezAlmanac. Values obtained from the Nautical Almanac and Pub. 229 are clearly identified on a button. When you press the button you are taken to the page that has that value with the row, column and value highlighted. Even when ezAlmanac is doing all the work, it can teach you how to do it manually using the books!

ezAlmanac performs all astronomical calculations using the NOVAS 3.1 software from the US Naval Observatory (USNO) and a JPL ephemeris that covers the years 1961 through 2059. Since all calculations are performed in the software, ezAlmanac is fully functional with no dependency on the internet.

Additional features:

- Ability to export almanac pages to a PDF file for use outside the app
- Interface with Dropbox to export sight data or pages
- Compass check using celestial body
- Rhumb line and great circle route calculations

Please check out www.ezCelestial.com for a full description of the application and in-app help pages.

Excellent teaching aid. Shows you exactly where in the almanac or site reduction table ( 229, not 249) the values come from. You can enter any date and any time if you want to practice on an example from a celestial navigation text you are studying from. You don't have to buy new almanacs yearly as any future (or prior year) is available. Unless your iPad is destroyed or runs out of batteries, there no reason to make yearly purchases and carry the paper books. The app isn't entirely intuitive, but has good instructions and you can learn without too much effort. Easier than learning celestial navigation in the first place.

Unlike other reviewers comments you can in fact take a sighting and enter that time and sextant measurements and have that reduction calculated. Part of me feels that if you are going to have the program do all the calculations, you might as well just use gps. But there's something fulfilling about using a sextant, and the calculations are tedious and subject to arithmetic errors.

This app isn't inexpensive, but you don't have to buy the almanacs and reduction tables which are more expensive. I bought both apps, but I think this one is much more helpful than ezsights.

Fantastic! But there are two apps. Choose carefully.

I was initially unsure about this program, but it is ALL that it says. Very easy to use. Website offers plenty of help. Stores 25 fixes. Has actual almanacs accessible to the user.

A TREMENDOUS benefit to the user is that pressing the " button " with a parameter takes you right to the correct page of the table and highlights the line in the chart. What a great way to learn and crosscheck yourself. I dont think programs costing twice as much do that

Some improvements? It gives a non-zoomable screen of LOP, and no actual map, as the other product does. As other reviewer said, identifying the LOPS on screen would be nice as well as what it thinks your actual position is . Also, as other reviewer said, actual maps. But, if i was WAY OFFSHORE, maps wouldn't matter, i guess.

I know their other product has maps, but i am confused? Why do i need two products. If i understood the differences, besides maps, i might be more clear. That is the only problem i see: two somewhat overlapping but GREAT products?

Do i need both? That cost is probably too high, but then even if i have both, which do i use day to day?

What it does, it is excellent, quick and easy.....

Outstanding app for offshore sailors

I am recently certified by US Sailing for celestial navigation. This app provides all the data needed from Nautical Almanac and HO229 for sight reductions. The Expert function can either simplify your process or provide a cross check on your reductions. No need to buy or tote the books with this app. It does not need an Internet connection. All you need in addition to this app is a sextant and a visible horizon. For the price of one year's Nautical Almanac you get all the data/tools you need for the next 30+ years.
