It's an ok app at best

It's a fairly nice port of Open Office Writer to the iPad. The designers have done a pretty good job of bringing over the desktop app to the iPad, though the desktop paradigm doesn't always work really well in the mobile world.

The good:
-Full desktop word processor power on a mobile device
-Familiar interface for any desktop user, but especially for those who use Open Office or Libre Office.
-There are some clever features, such as the cursor locator, which do help make it work well on the iPad. Unfortunately, most aren't that clever. See below.

The bad:
-Transition from desktop to mobile is not fluid. The app needs to change more to fit in with mobile "touch" apps. Many features, such as spell check, do not work intuitively on an iPad. There are too many gimmicks in place to "make it work" rather than doing things a completely different, and ultimately better, way for the iPad.
-The devs claim that v2.2 fixes performance and typing delay issues. I actually laughed when I read that one. Performance and delay problems are still fully intact.

The ugly (literally):
-They used old widgets for the interface. Compared to the smooth and polished look of most apps on iOS, this thing just looks clunky.
-The flat black-and-white buttons on the upper-right screen serve their purposes, but look cheap. Again, they need to come up with a more integrated, polished solution.

Spell check is useless

I used Open Word to make a huge list of DVDs. Along the way I would use the Spell Check function (Add To Dictionary, in particular), save my changes, then close the document. Upon reopening the document I noticed that the changes weren’t permanent. I was right back at square one. I guess I’ll have to live with it until this problem can be fixed. Very frustrating.

Completely Useless

Typing response is unusably slow with an external keyboard. Also Dropbox complains that they’re using an API which is deprecated, and I was unable to make Dropbox access work at all. One star for a good idea (and because I can’t give it zero) but -4 stars for not being useable.
