Smart News is really smart

I was apparently one of the first regular user of the app and shared articles on Twitter constantly. 3 or 4 of the developers asked me for an interview via Skype and what Interested ME, was that they were all very young and what interested THEM was WHY I was so interested in the news. An earlier reviewer cited being fed too much liberal news and she should be happy with the addition of NEWSMAX which is definitely right leaning. Early on the developers said the algorithms choose the articles in your feed by the articles you actually read and your interest profile is just algorithms doing what they do but you have the option to choose a tab and read any article from any of the magazine you have added. I asked them to please keep it that was and not to start choosing ( as Facebook does ) articles to put forth an agenda, especially not a political agenda. So far I don’t see it happening. I have pretty eclectic interests and really enjoy the variety I have to choose from. This app also gives you the ability to swipe over to Reader View and read the articles without the annoying advertisements. All in all I hardly use any of my other news apps. I am afraid to count how many tabs I have on my home page! Love it!!

Good variety but with a strong left lean

There is enough variety to see a interesting amount of news and information pieces but a larger portion of liberal left material ( I consider myself a pragmatic).Unfortunately, If you want to find a large amount of race baiting and police malfeasance it is overwhelmingly here. I usually stay away from opening these agenda stories.

The generic auto response talks about adding Fox as a preference. "Hi There, Thanks for your updated review! The articles in the Top channel are refreshed regularly, so at any given time you might see more liberal or more conservative news, but ultimately our algorithms are made to provide a balanced perspective. You can easily add Fox News, The Blaze, National Review, Daily Caller, or other conservative sites by going to Discover (last tab on the right), using the search bar, and adding channels. - Nate with SmartNews"

I take all right wing and left wing news stories, from Fox, CNN, Atlantic Journal with a large grain of salt. Give me a break with that generic response! Stories from more quality sources such as Wall Street Journal would be helpful. It continues to be dominant left wing race baiting, police hating “victim victim, pay retribution “ but I think that is more indicative of the mainstream popular media. I still enjoy seeing a variety of articles and avoid clicking most of the overtly biased stories. Proceed with your smart filters on.

Unbiased news selection? Not a chance

Edit: I got the same message you all did from development, “you can add conservative news if you want.” This right here reveals the problem with the app; why should we have to add Fox News when Huffington Post and BuzzFeed come standard? Shouldn’t all news come standard? This shows a clear bias on the part of the app, and I don’t even particularly want to read conservative news! I wanted a less biased news feed, and this app does not deliver. The app could promote centrist news sources by setting centrist news sources as the tab default and allow users to add more extreme voices at the poles, but this isn’t what Smart News does. Unbias the settings of your app. Also, consider adding a tag to news sources that describe their leanings.

Got the app because an ad claimed it unbiased your news feed. After 2 minutes with the app it’s clear this was a lie. Front page articles from CNN, Huffington Post, BuzzFeed, and Vox? Hardly unbiased sources right there. I went in thinking this app would show me multiple sources take on a particular issue, instead I just got the same click-bait, leftist outrage news feed I’ve been seeing for the last two years. Get a subscription to The Financial Times and The Economist. Stop looking at these BS opinion pieces people are calling news.

SmartNews is optimized to provide news from both sides. If you'd like a different perspective on the news, you can add sources such as Reuters or The AP as tabs on our Discover page. The "For You" section on the Top channel will also change to better reflect your interests & help you discover stories based on your reading preferences.
