A location-based soundwalk

For more info visit 59acres.com

Grab your headphones and comfy shoes for a site-specific, immersive soundwalk that takes you on an urban odyssey exploring the built environment and natural world around La Jolla Playhouse and UC San Diego. This poetic, meditative and innovative work from Los Angeles-based artist Marike Splint offers new ways of seeing and listening as it navigates you through the physical, cultural and geographical landscapes we inhabit, in search of the extraordinary amidst the mundane.

..
To experience the soundwalk, you download a custom-built app and bring your own mobile device and headphones. The experience starts in front of the box office of La Jolla Playhouse. From there, the app will guide you through known and lesser-known paths, shedding a new perspective on familiar places. Your location and movements will conjure the sound and text you are hearing.
.
Layered with disarming metaphors, historical details, and personal musings, 59 ACRES will take you on a personal meditation through the physical, cultural, and geographical landscapes we inhabit.

WHEN TO GO

We recommend doing the walk between sunrise and sunset. Once you have downloaded the app, you can experience 59 ACRES whenever you want within those hours.

The experience takes about 60 minutes. You will walk approximately 1.5 miles round trip on the university campus which includes terrain of grass, pavement, gravel and natural soil. The walk has accessibility ramp alternatives whenever there are steps or stairs. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a jacket for inclement weather.

The walk begins at La Jolla Playhouse and ends at Geisel Library. From Geisel, it's a 0.8 mile (approx. 15 min) walk back to La Jolla Playhouse.

We recommend doing the walk in the morning,
or between late afternoon and sunset,
when often the sunlight beautifully changes.
