Ratings and Reviews
The illustrations are so good that this storybook left me wishing it had become a larger, longer animated video production instead of just a storybook. It has tremendous potential but suffers badly from voiceless characters without distinct personalities and from a sadly underdeveloped plot. Even as a children's storybook it takes a minimalist form, barely stretching beyond outline form. And, in the iPhone version, the text is so small it is exceedingly difficult to read. A previous reviewer is correct to point out that this story - a morality tale about how different skin colors only mask our fundamental similarity - has been told before, and by more writers than just Dr. Seuss; however, it's a story that bears repeating again and again with new characters and different plot twists. The author of Fickle Flocks has missed many great opportunities in this storybook to do just that. [For one, the subject of shearing, the value of the various wool colors, and the sameness of the shorn sheep.] But s/he was off to a great start and it's not too late. Adding narration (with text that illuminates as it is spoken), individual characters with unique voices, and more in-depth plot developments could make Fickle Flocks great. I hope the author will keep at it. It could be really wonderful.
This book is meant to be read aloud...
and recorded, then played back and listened to. The settings gear allows for this on iPad but not iPhone (probably bc txt is too tiny to read) so narration might be a good addition for iPhone version. Other than having a parent or grandparent record this for a non-reader to listen to when they are away, this is EXACTLY the type of interactive book that young readers need to improve fluency. They will hear their own mistakes and subsequent fluency improve once they read it again. Was a perfect addition to our 20 min/day routine. And the artistry is so beautiful that a parent actually wants to go through the book again. Quality job.
I came across this recently while looking for picture books for my niece and nephews and it's wonderful! The sheep are so adorable and the animation is really clever and the story has a good moral that the kids can still enjoy. My niece and nephews love it so far, it's nice that some of the pages are interactive (the sheep make baa-ing sounds sometimes) and you can also record your voice reading the story so your kids can follow along later on their own. I recommend this to anyone!
