If you ever see a group of teenagers (or twenty- or thirtysomethings) filming themselves doing literally anything, know this: They’re probably making a video to share on TikTok. Its infinite scroll of new videos combines perfectly edited lip-synching, hilarious sketches, and mesmerizing dance moves with delightful special effects and filters. It’s hard not to fall in love with everyone’s fluffy pets, awkward parents, impressive glow-ups, fails of every kind, and songs and pop-culture references that spark a million memes.
TikTok, The Last Frontier
Upsides: The app allows ppl to find community with likeminded people from all over the world. Allows you to earn your audience, and build your reputation through producing good content frequently. Over all, there is a very positive vibe on TikTok compared to other social media platforms, and the users seem to keep each other in check when it comes to being negative and bullying. It’s more entertaining and many times more informative than tv. It gives you a window into real peoples worlds as well, as opposed to Hollywood scripted scenes and scenarios. There are so many creative people out there freely sharing their art forms, and helping each other out, it’s beautiful to see.
Downside: TikTok needs to build in a better reporting and appeal system. The current system has been weaponized to attack people simply because of opposing views. (I’ve seen people organize mass reporting parties for TikTok on Twitter.) Which isn’t fair to people who are working hard to make good clean content that happens to rub another group the wrong way. It can cause their videos to be removed their accounts to be limited or banned unjustly. Meanwhile very problematic content and malicious predatory behavior seems hard to get under control. I suggest more human discernment, deeper investigations into reports, and possibly repercussions for users who abuse the reporting system.

*update lowered my review again because I reported someone was bragging about and promoting r@pe and I commented that it was wrong after This app found no violations on his videos. His videos saying it's ok to r@pe women. Then comment banned me and my account is at risk for saying r@pe is wrong. This is horrific and wrong on so many levels. Do better tictok team. Make the app safe for a change. Disgusted. *update*. It appears to me things are improving on the app, and I hope the TT team keeps it up • *update* I wish til tok would stop suppressing indigenous and people of color voices!! The proof is in the view count!! And banning people for no reason, while allowing hateful hate speech in other ways. I would give 5 stars if they fixed this *update*. It's getting better but I still feel there are a lot of changes that tiktok needs to make and stop shadowbanning people who don't deserve it (like myself and ban the really horrible people on the app. * I did nothing wrong and got shadow banned. Yet people can do some awful things on the app and their content has thousands of followers. Would rate 5 stars if I didn't get shadow banned, because the app is fun and could be a great tool for community. Content creators who repeatedly, and intentionally break so called community guidelines get fame and their videos pushed, while people like me get shadow-banned for being my nerd self.
