Description

“Cinematographers, directors or anyone involved in professional video production MUST have The Director’s Viewfinder” -Lifestyle for Men Magazine

*** Featured in Lifestyle for Men Magazine! ***

Focal is the most accurate and sleek viewfinder app on the App Store. Like a traditional viewfinder, this app helps evaluate a variety of different camera/lens combinations first hand, while offering many features a traditional viewfinder cannot. This app is a must-have for directors, cinematographers and anyone that may be involved in video production or still photography. While other viewfinder apps are clunky and frustrating to use, Focal’s clean design and intuitive controls make it a vital tool for any artist. Use Focal to scout locations, create storyboards, and save valuable time on set!

Because Focal is widely used by professional cinematographers and directors, it has many unique features that will immediately benefit your production. For example, continuous adjustment allows you to smoothly scale values without needing to step through fixed presets. This is great for replicating a zoom lens or finding an unusual aspect ratio. Additionally, Invisible Mode allows you to hide all on-screen controls while still manipulating presets. Removing distractions from the screen is great for showing camera movement to cast and crew.

Other features include:
‣ Try out different camera and lens combinations
‣ Create presets for commonly used gear
‣ Easily swipe between presets OR pinch to continuously adjust them
‣ Choose from a list of cameras and shooting modes (beta)
‣ Capture images to your camera roll along with location, lens, and other settings information for blocking shots, storyboarding, and location scouting
‣ Shoot in Portrait orientation for unique filming situations
‣ Use additional iPhone lens adapters for wider angle of view
‣ Label your scenes and shots for easy organization
‣ Use nicknames for common setting presets
‣ Jump in and out of Invisible Mode to hide all on-screen controls
‣ See current angle of view and color temperature
‣ Customize what controls appear in the live view

Adjustable fields include:
¬ Camera details
¬ Shooting mode
¬ Lens focal length
¬ Aspect ratio
¬ Additional crop factor
¬ Anamorphic adapters
¬ iPhone lens attachments

With a new name, new design, and new internals, Focal has cleaned up, put on a tux, and is ready to walk out on the red carpet. Here’s what’s new:

‣ New camera settings allow you to manage details of different sensors and shooting modes
‣ Highly accurate new custom camera setups account for sensor and shooting aspect ratio
‣ New camera presets list allows you to add cameras from a list of common cameras and shooting modes
‣ Completely redesigned menus for easier access to each setting
‣ New color temperature setting allows you to see your camera's current white balance setting
‣ Focal length outlines now adjust to the shooting aspect ratio
‣ Menu settings can be turned on and off for a greater level of customization
‣ Take advantage of the long lens of the iPhone 7 Plus

Great but needs work

I love the app and use it quite frequently as I shoot on a lot of different formats(35mm to 4x5).

Just had one question/suggestion for devs. The system for selecting ratio and crop factor is not intuitive nor perfectly accurate. While crop-factor can be determined it is different between formats due to aspect ratio. While 6x7 may technically have a .5 crop factor because I need to adjust aspect ratio the math and my testing side by side say .48 is more accurate.

Anyways what I am saying is that I would like for this to be addressed and for the system to be redone and have some defaults for crop-factor/format combinations as they go together hand in hand, rather than me having to select each individually and test.

My friend had the Alpa app and another viewfinder that does this. And I am tempted to move over if this isn't addressed in the near future. Anyways keep up the work hope this can be resolved.

Thank you for the feedback! We have been hard at work addressing these issues and with the new 3.0 update we have fixed them all! The update adds new "Camera Presets" which join crop factor and aspect ratio to a specific camera. You can also add cameras from a built-in list of presets!

Bugs with iPhone 13 Pro cameras

I love this app, but with the iPhone 13 Pro cameras it seems that something broke with how the app captures photos. Photos captured do not match what is seen on screen, with all the sides significantly cropped. I never saw this problem on the iPhone 11 Pro, so it seems that it must be related to the new cameras. I hope this gets fixed soon, as I love using this app for shooting unusual aspect ratios, but it’s currently unusable for me.

Wish there’s more aspect ratio and focal length

I bought this app because I wanted to see the difference between 10mm and 24mm, and also the difference of 1.85:1 and 2.35:1, but the widest focal length in this App is 35mm, and the only aspect ratio is 16:9. The interface looks good, and other functions are good too, but I’m disappointed by not getting what I expected.

Developer Response ,

The displayed angle of view is limited by the physical lens on your device, but Focal works with aftermarket lens attachments to display a wider angle of view. This means you can attach a wide-angle lens to your device and use Focal’s iPhone Lens Attachment menu item to set the zoom factor of your lens. This AMIR lens kit is an example that works well: https://amzn.to/2t9i13n.

Aspect ratio is also an adjustable field in the app like focal length. In the menu you can create presets to quickly swipe through, such as 1.85:1 and 2.35:1. When you select the aspect ratio label in the top right of the live view, you can pinch the screen to adjust to view any aspect ratio.

For more helpful tips in using the app, you can run through the tutorial quickly again from the bottom of the main menu. We hope this is helpful! Feel free to send us a message on the support site if you have any questions!
