I've been using this app for about 6 months or so and it has become my main social network when it comes to meeting new people. Thanks to Hello Pal I've met very friendly people willing to share experiences about their countries and cultures and I appreciate that a lot.

Eh

I like what this app intended to do...expose people do various cultures, languages, and new friends globally. In reality, I just get spammed with dozens of inappropriately sexual messages or people getting mad because I won’t send pics, even though all I did was post a question asking a cultural or language related question. Yes, I know I can click on “ignore”, but it’s annoying when over 95% of the message you get are attempts to turn this into a dating/hookup app. HiNative is a similar app that manages to accomplish the intents of this app, minus the spam. Maybe if Hello Pal were to incorporate more language related question templates and learning materials, it would help attract a different community of users. In the meantime, it resembles Tinder more than anything else.

Be safe

This app is a good idea for learning languages but take caution while using it. The majority of users on this app use it for inappropriate purposes. Most people who send me messages are only sending me inappropriate photos of their inappropriate places or trying to get me to send them photos of myself. Most people you will see on this app believe that this is a place to find a quick bang or a desperate relationship and have no actual interest in exchanging languages. There is very low security and there is no way to block anyone. So be very cautious and very careful of who you talk to and remember that, despite what you see, this app is not a dating app.
