During the 1960s the newly independent Congo was the scene of constant warfare. Congo Merc puts you in the middle of that fighting with a task force of elite commandos. You conduct breakneck advances into the heart of enemy territory, seize critical objectives and, just as important, return to home base.
Missions include everything from hostage rescue to tracking down Cuban cadre. You recruit from a variety of unit types, including jeep-mounted commandos, light armor, sappers, air support, paratroopers and many others.
Once a task force is organized, you maneuver it into the Congo. The map covers the entire country, and when a force enters certain points an event occurs. Events can include anything from UN intervention to ambushes by enemy fighters. Combat is resolved via a quasi-tactical procedure in which both tactical superiority and firepower play their parts.

Not quite the board game
I own the original board game this is based on (Decision Games Congo Merc). This video game is a good approximation of the game, but there are two main shortcomings. One is that you don't know the intel cards you may possibly pick because they are never shown, you only see the results. If there was a deck to look through or a reference, it would help. The other issue, and this is why it is a 2.5 star game is that the battle engine is really bad. I have now played 10 full games and the OPFOR have a 100% hit rate while the mercs are more like 1/6 of the time, which is normal. The board game gives a combat power value to each unit and that is the number of D6 you roll and the Cubans are the most powerful unit with a value of 6. So the player roles a corresponding number of dice to determine combat outcomes. Since you don't see the dice in this game, you don't know the roll results except for the outcomes and the impact if extra logistics and leaders are not apparent. Overall a good first try, but has bugs and needs work.
Hard to grasp
I quite enjoyed Vietnam '65, so figured I would give this game, also a look at cold-war counter-insurgency, a look as well. Unfortunately, it doesn't play nearly as well. Vietnam 65 was designed specifically as a tablet game, and it takes advantage of all that the format offers. Congo Merc was a board game, and it's adaptation to iOS is pretty awkward. I have a feeling there's a good game in there, but damned if I can figure out how to play it.
The "rules" are nowhere near complete, and reading them from beginning to end is a hopeless task. Ditto for the tutorial: I went through the whole thing twice, and still wasn't sure how to play the game. A better approach would be something like Tigris and Euphrates, that walks you through an actual play of the game. As is, there are certain basic things I just can't get to work properly, such as air insertion, air movement, and recon. It's not clear how Ops are spent either. Movement itself is difficult enough, and it's often not clear which areas a unit can or cannot reach. Clearly there are terrain factors it work, but that is not well explained either. I've encountered other bugs, like not being able to select a group at all, even though it is clearly there on the map. I don't think the game is necessarily all that hard, it's just not explained clearly, and the UI is buggy and awkward. With a little work, it could certainly be improved.
Great Idea! Needs a little work.
The concept is great, as I love this game and others that have been pushed out. But it is hard to grasp at 1st and for whatever reason the city of Leopoldville does not allow me to click on to retrieve my solders they are just stuck there. When i click on it the screen darkens and only when I click on Air recon does it go back to normal. You get that fixed and some minor adjustments this would be a 5 star for those who enjoy this type of game play
