MODES OF PLAY

There are two modes of play: "table stakes" or "match play".

In TABLE STAKES, you and your opponent start with an equal number of chips. The goal is to collect all the chips before your opponent does. Use the doubling cube to increase the stakes. If you play with the "Jacoby rule", gammons and backgammon don't count unless the cube has been turned. If you play with the "Beavers rule", a player who accepts a double may immediately redouble and still keep the cube.

In MATCH PLAY, the goal is to be the first player to reach a specified total number of points. Use the doubling cube to increase the stakes. The "Crawford rule" takes the doubling cube out of play for one game when a player gets to within one point of winning.

You offer a double by sliding the cube over to your opponent's side of the board. Opponent can accept the double by pressing "Take" (the game continues at twice the previous stakes), or reject the double by pressing "Pass" (he loses the game and must pay the previous stakes.)

----------------

COMPUTER PLAYER

The computer AI is VERY strong. There are two levels of play: Average and Strong. Both are fun and challenging.

But can you win?

I've been playing backgammon for over 40 years, and had found the old version fun to play and with an even chance to win.
This update though...
How do I know I'm going to lose?....when the computer doubles at an odd time and then immediately rolls exactly what is needed to knock me off the board and put itself in perfect position.
Computer also seems to consistently roll 2 or 3 doubles once it starts bearing off.
Too frustrating for me feeling like I don't have a fair chance. I'll have to look elsewhere.

Stop Whining Already!

Ignore all those negative reviews-this is a GREAT app! I'm a very good player, with years of experience. Stop whining when the computer beats you, turn on its amazing tutor function, and shut up and learn something! Be grateful that Tom Keith is willing to turn you into an expert backgammon player for free! I play against the computer at the expert level, and I've gotten to the point where I win about a third of the time, which sure wasn't the case when I started. Easy to use, great graphics, and yes, the dice are fair, whether you think so or not. If you're an intelligent person, and you want to have a great time while really learning to play backgammon, then this app can't be beat. But if you're a whiny baby who just wants to feel superior to a computer, then take a pass.
8/4/17 This is an addendum to my previous 5-star revue: This latest update is horrible! Ugly, clumsy, counter-intuitive and confusing. Virtually unplayable. PLEASE give us the old version back!

From the better to the worse

I played Igammon daily. Then came the update, that I ended up deleting. Missing my old companion, I came here to see if the reactions were in sync with my thinking. It seems every sensible addict to Igammon has the same feeling. If Keith does decide to go back to a better expression of the original version, my only two wishes would be 1/- a multi games statistical analysis (info) and 2/- to get back the ability to quickly quit a session when I don't like the way it started (the quit option disappeared in New version). If not, I sincerely thank Keith for all these passed years of great igammoning.
