IndexMaker creates an index or list of figures from PDF documents.
(Not only for Apple Pages users who miss a index function.)
Select a PDF file or an whole folder as source for your index.
Create a index of all words in the document(s) (full text index) or just for some specified words (target word index).
Edit the result by filtering out the stopwords (the, it, a, and...) or by substitute the flections (trees-> tree)
You can annotate each entry and, if necessary, subordinate it to a umbrella term, thus creating a hierarchy in your index.
Determine how the addresses should be formated (e.g. 1-5 or 1ff.).
You can export the index as PlainText, PDF, HTML, XML, RTF, MS Word or CSV file. For print- and PDF export you are be able to select the font type and size.

Incredible app making indexing a breeze
Publishing my first book and working on the index myself was a little daunting. After a lot of research, I came across the IndexMaker app. Purchasing it was the best decision in terms of price, quality, usability, and support. I had a few questions and reached out to Paul who responded right away and was incredibly kind and helpful. There's a small learning curve as with anything new but the app is really user-friendly. Some of my favorite feautures include the ability to add special characters like diactrical marks for romanized Sanskrit words, eliminating specific page numbers on indexed words, adding annotations to words, and creating hierarchies. This software really is amazing and I am so thankful for the precision and care that went into it's development. I highly recommend this app to anyone looking for indexing software.
Best of breed
Here is a mac native app, that works exceptionally and has -the- best support I've ever experienced. Had a frustrating bug and within hours, the developer had found the issue and sent me a custom version that resolved it until a new version could be published.
It's exceptional and light years ahead of its competitors. Its most popular competitors is a $70 java app with a horrific interface.
If you need an index on a Mac, this is the option. Your time is more valuable than the cost of this software. It saved me dozens of hours.
Amazing
I purchased this app to add an index to several over 1000 page PDF tunebooks I generated for traditional Irish music.
It's amazing. Has a bit of a learning curve, but between the "stop words" and the font-based filtering, I was able to create exactly what I needed then saved that off as an index template for use on other books of the series.
I use the tool to export a PDF index, then add the index on to the end of the existing PDF files using the Manage Pages feature in Adobe Acrobat.
If you have title or other foward pages followed by content pages with page numbers starting at 1, you'll want to make sure to set the starting page offset in the app appropriately.
The developer really has thought of everything. I'm so thankful to have found this app.
