Description

Beta testing of code check included now for Canadian code and Egyptian code.

For all structural engineers, steel designers, mechanical engineers: This engineering application for the iPhone or the iPod Touch calculates the mechanical and structural properties of three-plate built up section members. That includes moment of inertia, modulus of section, radius of gyration, area and weight. The calculations are done in both principal axes.

This program is particularly useful for analysis and design of indeterminate structures and for calculating actual and allowable (permissible) stresses

The input is top flange width, top flange thickness, bottom flange width, bottom flange thickness, web depth and web thickness. The top flange and bottom flange dimensions can vary.

you can select a section from a large library of hot rolled shapes: European IPE, HEA, HEB, HEM, American W shapes, Canadian W metric shapes and British universal beams and columns (UB and UC shapes). More shapes from other countries will be added in the next releases. All these will be free upgrades for those who purchase the current version.

The input can be in mm or inch units, the output of area, Ixx, Sxx, Sxt, Sxb, Iyy, Iyt, Iyb, Syy rx, ry, rt, rb, Syt, Syb, depth and neutral axis can be displayed in mm or inch units. The weight can be displayed in kg/m or Lb/ft.

The program is eventually operable - you need to clear all the dimensions until all that's left are the three X's and hit "done". It should then come up with BUILT UP in the shapes box. Now you can type in your plate dimensions and get the properties calculated. The developer should fix this or at least include the start- up directions. Very frustrating at first!

Structural Engineet

I thought this app should be great! But it is actually a trash! The first thing you see in the app was a section showing a built- up section. Intuitively I knew that the blue texts were inputs. I change the units to inch. Then i began changing the dimensions. When i finished, all it said was that " there are no matches found"! What? It wasn't supposed to find any matches at all, I thought it was supposed to calculate properties based om my input. And where are the built in library for hot rolled shapes? And all those things that the developer promised that this app would do, like giving me the allowable stresses... Was this program created by a real structural engineer who really knows what a structural engineer need? I dont give it any star at all. In fact, if this app is not fixed, this should not be included in the App Store.

Does not work correctly

When entering a stock section name, there is no way to select from the list which is shown, and the last section seems to be selected from the list. For instance, if you type "w12x19", a list including W12x19 & W12x190 appears, but it is not a pick list. If you click Done, you get properties for W12x190 rather than W12x19.
Also, as with iConcrete, the properties seem to randomly switch from inch to mm. Why do we need "mm" properties for the US/AISC standard sections when the design community and trades are NOT going metric within the next decade?
