Learning Japanese is a mental game that thrives on challenge and reward. Jalup doesn’t just plop a fun game on top of the language. It engages the brain’s natural urge to solve problems by making learning the language itself the game.
No spoon fed translations. No “choose your answer.” No repetitive memorization. No more boredom disguised as excitement.
Jalup is the ultimate puzzle game. You learn one new sentence with one new word, each building off of the previous sentences and words. The only information clue you are provided with to understand and solve the current sentence puzzle is the new word and your previous, growing knowledge. You alone must arrange all the pieces in your head to make sense of the 9,000+ puzzles.
Each sentence puzzle challenges you with just the right amount of difficulty you need. Each puzzle solved rewards you with confidence and excitement. The sentences get harder, your satisfaction grows, and you’re addicted to a game app that is actually good for you.
Learning a language is mentally, physically and emotionally tolling. Jalup will be there for you from beginning to end, every single step of the way.

One of the best purchases for your Japanese learning
Japanese is not an easy language to learn, but this program will save you a lot of pain and frustration if you follow the path it presents. As long as you know how to read the kana and kanji (which there are learning cards for as well) used in each sentence learning card, these cards are carefully constructed to teach either a new vocabulary word, grammar point, or natural language use. Additionally, the app has its own SRS test system, so all one needs to do is show up to the app and do the reviews.
With the completion of the Beginner deck, all the other decks teach concepts using Japanese only, so your Japanese fluency will accelerate. It may seem scary, but the Japanese explanations are written such that learners can easily start learning Japanese as Japanese without the extra work of definition branching (one can compare the definitions used in this app to those found in a Japanese-Japanese dictionary)
If you are looking to take the JLPT exams, it would be best to buy JLPT materials, but if you want to accelerate fluency, this app has everything one needs to begin the journey.
Very good app, high price (update)
As others have mentioned, this app has a well-designed spaced repetition system spread across multiple courses, each of which has a unique angle that appears useful for progressive learning (from initial kana to kanji/english blended sentences, english to japanese sentences, and japanese sentences without english based on japanese words you learned in previous courses). I’ve tried 15-20 language learning apps and after spending a few months with the free sample courses, I decided to go all in and purchased the maximum package for $299. I initially was worried I couldn’t use this app with family share, but found a workaround for my wife’s phone: I signed her out of app store, signed myself in, restored the purchase, and after the download signed her back in. So for those of you with family accounts learning together, this is the way to go. Excellent job so far by the developer — and I hope to see the other Jalup decks added soon. Thanks!

Can you send me an email (use the support button from the App Store), and I’ll see if I can help with this issue.
This app is amazing. I have made the most consistent progress I ever have using only this app and I now have a learning path I am confident in going forward. Forget textbooks, this app is all you need! I can now write 2300 kanji from memory and am starting to learn via the J-J cards in Jalup Intermediate. Different things work for different people, but I can say that as someone who took some undergrad courses, tried a ton of self-study material including wanikani and textfugu, and actually lived in Japan for 3 months, this is the way to go for actually learning and being able to use real Japanese in a non-immersive environment. I’m heading back to Japan at the end of the year and will be happily grinding away through this amazing study content until I leave (and probably after I get there). Thank you so much Adam for your hard work.
