Editors’ Notes

Insightful and inspiring, documentarian Ken Burns’ first app reveals the patterns of American history through sweeping narratives composed of bite-sized clips from his films. Whether you’re listening to innovation in the form of Louis Armstrong’s improvisational jazz or watching it emerge in the creation of the Brooklyn Bridge, Burns’ thoughtful commentary and expertly crafted stories expose the beautiful and sometimes heart-rending shape of history.

Constantly Crashes

Avoid. I was so excited to view the clips in this app but it constantly crashes when I try to play in on Airplay. I can't get more than two minutes into a playlist before a crash. Furthermore, when switching between videos it shows a transition on the iPad that doesn't appear on my television. Instead it jumps to the main menu and then back into another video. This app feels poorly written and improperly tested; it ultimately doesn't deliver what is advertised.

A new hobby

I recently shut down a dozen or so long running games I had been playing on my iPad. I just felt that they sucked too much time out of my life that could be spent more creatively in other ways. As a result I'm writing again and playing my guitar and mandolin more often. Now along comes this beautifully designed app which threatens to lock me to the device watching deeply inspirational and gorgeously filmed snippets of Ken Burns historical masterpieces. Even worse, the little bits are presented thematically and linked to the full length films. Well, so be it. As long as I learn and am inspired by becoming intimately familiar with this genius's vast body of work, I'm in for the long haul. I will just have to strive for a balance. Thank you, Ken Burns and team! I have a new hobby!
