Description

Turn-by-turn navigation on your bikes dashboard has been introduced for the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S and R (MY 18,19 &20), the KTM 790 ADVENTURE (MY19 &20), the KTM 390 ADVENTURE (MY20) as well as KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE GT (MY19 & 20) & KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R (MY20) (Owners of 2017 KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S & R can also benefit by having the cost-free software upgrade installed and activated at an official KTM dealer.).

Connecting a Bluetooth-enabled Smartphone means more than just co-ordinates and directions. Trips and routes can be saved and loaded for repeat use to allow for forward-planning, and an offline mode means a specific map can be downloaded and used without consuming mobile data in roaming. KTM dealers and the network for servicing and assistance come as custom icons on the map.

Simply negotiate the ‘pairing’ process to make the phone and the bike ‘talk’ to each other and the information can then be relayed. The App transmits turn-by-turn guidance, the distance to the next navigation point, the street name and the arrival time/distance to the destination. In addition, audio guidance in various languages and offline maps are also available.

KTM MY RIDE also allows incoming calls and music, displaying battery life and signal strength. All this data appears on the dash and can be managed with the mode switch, keeping your hands where they belong: on the handlebar.

Room for Improvement

I really really really hope that KTM does a complete overhaul on this app and get this right. It’s very frustrating that you pay 20K + on a motorcycle then you have to purchase the app separately which is not an issue but it is when you know the app can be better. I would like to see the app interface with the motorcycle faster and I would like to see the apps default settings change. For example the app is set to avoid the highway by default. I’m going to give it 2 stars for now bc I believe they can make this right and be in that 4-5 star range.

Not bad, actually

Well I'm going to go against the trend here and say it's pretty good. Connecting (starting from the bike as someone suggested) worked smoothly with an 890 Adventure. Navigation worked great, a nice minimal alternative to a GPS or mounting your phone. You can decide if you want to allow highways or dirt roads. Battery drain was there, but far, far less than other similar apps I've used. No problem getting through a day of riding without charging. I can't speak to the music and phone functions since I don't do that stuff on the bike. Don't get discouraged by the bad reviews, KTM, this app is most welcome. Just keep optimizing that battery use!

UPDATE: A few problems though. First and worst, every couple of hours the bike display will freeze, even though the app is will working. "Rebooting" the bike by turning off the ignition and starting back up fixes, but necessitates an unwelcome stop. Second, when the app displays alternative routes and lets you pick one, it will soon revert to the one it chose after you've started riding. Finally, there's no way to report any of this since the support links don't work. A work in progress, but maybe given up on?

Great App - Works Well - Should be Free

From day 1 I had zero problems with this app. otter than figuring out how it works, user errors and experience. It works perfect for me and I find no need to use other nav. apps like Google Maps or Waze. Connection to my iPhone 11 is automatic and if you mount your phone to your handlebar you can see the map directional guidance on the phone with turn-by-turn guidance on your KTM display, very cool and precise. Unlike other reviewers, I don’t experience any lag time issues with turns. If you have a weak cellular connection or older iPhone with Bluetooth 3 then it might be due to that vs the app. My iPhone 11 works great. This app also lets you download maps so you can navigate off-line, great for rural areas and I bet it will help with anyone experiencing lag time issues. I have not tried the voice nav guidance yet.
The only reason I gave this app a 4 star vs 5 is because I believe KTM should not charge a fee to download it, especially after buying one of their new motorcycles. It’s still worth the $8 and I’m glad I have it.
