An inside look into the brain of Stanley Kubrick
Stanley Kubrick's films all reveal an obsession with minute detail, so it is no surprise to learn that in real life he kept obsessively complete archives and notes of the filmmaking process. This app is a wonderful introduction to those archives, which are in part on view in a touring exhibition now at LACMA. There are some great photos of Kubrick on the set of 2001, Spartacus and Dr. Strangelove. ACMA also conducted some great video interviews for the app with people who worked with Kubrick or who were influenced by him, like Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan.
Highly recommended. And if you want to learn more about Kubrick's obsessive archiving practices, read Jon Ronson's book "Lost at Sea", which includes a report from Ronson on his many private visits to Kubrick's home and archives.
This Kubrick retrospective application is a great way to get a peek into the works and ideas of the famed and highly respected auteur. The app allows you to read, view and listen to all types of content from most of his works ranging from Dr. Spartacus to The Shining. Users can read about the films themselves as well as view production stills, scripts and other related material. Users can also listen to interviews Kubrick did at different points of his career regarding different films. Users can also view a timeline of his career and learn more about his unfinished projects such as the infamous Nopalean bio pic. The app is designed well and is simple to navigate with the location of the bottom menu. For die hard fans of the director this app will serve more as a appetizer since most of the present information we will be familiar with and it is not comprehensive in examination of his illustrious career. With that said it is still a worthwhile download for both novices and those in the know because it still gives you enough content to learn about or further appreciate the man.
An informative and fun behind-the-scenes look at Kubrick
So glad LACMA put this app together for all of the people who aren't able to attend the exhibition (and for those who are!). You can flip through it for hours. I love the timeline feature and the hi-res images of Kubrick's hand-written annotations on production documents. There are also some great video and audio interviews with Kubrick's collaborators like Chris Nolan and David Slade. There is so much to learn in this app. Even if you think you knew Kubrick, you'll find something that surprises you in here!
