Better than Duolingo for Vietnamese

This app is simple and concise, easy to learn basics and build on them, and plays the pronunciation every time so you can hear it and practice repeating it. This is essential for Vietnamese because there is a lot of nuance in the pronunciation that aren’t present Latin-derived languages I have studied.

Duolingo perhaps hasn’t been able to fund their Vietnamese lesson development department as thoroughly as some of their other languages, which are excellent. It was confusing to use and learn basics, they did not have the pronunciation of the words recorded to play upon the completion of each exercise.

rude notifications

This is a great app and very helpful for helping you learn a new words in your chosen language. However, their notifications go off at all hours of the night, are rude, and I’m tired of them telling me “NO EXCUSES you always have 5 minutes!”: It feels like they are just talking down to and yelling at me. You don’t need to use caps, that is considered yelling. Also, not everyone has 5 minutes, some people are lucky to sit down and have a break for 5 minutes during the day let alone get on their phone to use an app. And if they do, they have other responsibilities to use that spare time on. Not everyone has 5 minutes of free time every day to do other activities. It’s NOT an excuse, it’s life. This app is great to use as a supplement as well and not everyone may want to use it daily, I don’t always have time to use this app but I have other methods of learning Vietnamese as my fiancé speaks it and I am able to hear it around the house so this app is a great supplement to that for me. I like the reminders but wish we could set up to remember to use it on our schedule like “remind me only on weekends” or “only on Tuesday and Thursday”.

I would gladly give this app 5 stars, but I’m only giving 3 because of the rude notifications. If you get this app, I suggest having them turned off and making your own reminder, otherwise you will be woken up in the middle of the night being yelled at by this app.

Gorgeous and engaging

Visually this is the best language learning app I’ve ever used full stop, and that visual engagement really helps me focus because I’m not wasting time trying to figure out how the app works.

Also I like that for the most part, it doesn’t ding you for a wrong answer, it just gives you another shot and keeps going. I don’t see the point of having stressful strikes looking over you threatening to start the lesson over if you get too many wrong; this is a wonderful alternative.

Keep up the great work, devs. I hope this app brings you a lot of success to add even more languages.
