It's a battle for vocabulary and territory supremacy in this addictive, strategic take on word games. Find a friend, start spelling, and dominate the board one letter at a time.

I generally enjoy this game…playing daily with my mom and one friend. My friend is so brain heavy that he started games with me that must remain balanced (a mirror image across any line one chooses), which is a good extra challenge…others might wish to try. The advertisements became just Too much for me after many years and I finally paid for the app…what a relief!

This is a truly excellent game. Sure it's fun to try for the longest word you can make every turn, but you will lose more than you should if you play it this way. LetterPress is also a strategy game, you have to consider what letters will expand your territory, locking up tiles to reduce you opponent's choices and/or territory gains. How many people are really good at both words and strategy? Not so many, which is why the rematch feature is so valuable - for when you find a worthy opponent. (And that's my only quibble right now - sometimes when the other person resigns I tap for a rematch and am told that since I(?) resigned only they can initiate a rematch. :-p)I would play this game obsessively even if it was ugly, but it's so gorgeous that even if the game itself sucked I would probably still fire it up from time to time, just to see and play with its stunning elegance and beauty. This is both simply visual (what font is that?), and the countless well-thought-out interface touches - from shaking letters to sound effect choices to remembering your previous selection when you swipe right from the more screen. It's the kind of design much of which people won't notice consciously, because it consists mostly of rounding off all of the rough edges, leaving a stone that fits perfectly in your hand. A joy to play in all senses. Thanks atebits!

This is a fantastic game. I like everything about it, save maybe those people who spell 'ZYGOMORPHIC' turn one. What needs to be added, however, is offline, local mode. So many of my friends see me with this game, say, "Hey, what's that?" (either because of the minimalist, modern looking UI, or the fact that it's a word game that's not Words with Friends *gasp*), and many lean over my shoulder to help me find words. Its the kind of game that i end up explaining how it works, and, instead of being put off, people are like, "Really? So.. wait, you can block off the letters.. and use them any of them... A strategy and word game.. Cool!" You know what the next thing that WANTS to come rolling off my tongue is? "Yeah, it's awesome! Here, lemme pull up a game and I'll play ya." But since playing this game against someone currently requires there to have been two purchases of the game, many people don't even make the one purchases that would let them play with me (or you, or anyone else. But let's be real, they all want to play with me)! An offline mode will NOT lose you money. In fact, you will sell more copies of your game for a feature that costs you almost nothing (some simple development) as people play Letterpressers for fun and then get hooked! Just add a pass-and-play offline mode and you'll have a true winner on your hands.

One of the greatest developers and a rare one at that. He was able to create a simple, addicting, surprisingly strategic game and splattered it with minuscule design details that make a world of difference and can't help but make a design junkie crack a smile (i.e. when you swipe right to remove a game, the way a tile drags from air resistance when you manually move it, the new atebits logo used as the "spinning wheel," etc.) This game is much better than words with friends or scramble because it solves the main purpose that Loren created the app - to create a quick fix simple game to kill time. All the other apps are too intricate and lose their appeal when you get too lazy to think. This app is so simple yet has the strategy of a chess game and will keep you on your feet. Loren was also so intelligent that apple should be thanking him soon for reviving Game Center and stirring some buzz on it. Game Center pretty much went nowhere but I believe Loren has officially changed that by created this entire app's UI around Game Center. Instead of being self-centered like most developers trying to avoid using Game Center in its entirety, Loren design letterpress around it completely for simple and flawless integration. Hats off to a brilliant developer. Apple and Twitter truly lost a needle in a haystack.

  • Wonderful app but not a very interesting game

This review is for the free version. The game was not good enough for me to be motivated to buy the upgrade. I love the design of the app but I wish I could say the same about the game. It is fun the first two or three times but after that it is pretty boring, the reasons being:1. No time limit which means the players can take infinite time on their turn. That makes it really annoying2. If both players are smart enough to know good words and the rules of the game (like making plurals when possible so that the other player doesn't end up simply adding 's' to your word, in the process stealing your letters and getting more points than you did), then the game can take days to end and the end usually happens by creating an extremely rare word or when one of the players makes a foolish mistake. By the time the game ends even the winner wouldn't feel so victorious because the pride is minuscule compared to the amount of time (not effort) spent in achieving it.3. I am not sure about the algorithm that is behind what letters come up in each game but sometimes it is ridiculously easy letters (like lots of 's' and vowels) and sometimes it is extremely difficult. I feel like the players should be able to choose the difficulty and then matched accordingly.

This is, by far, (war of words being close second) the best turn based word game I've ever played. I paid for the full version and I've got to say, the interface is drop dead simple, the concept of the game is amazing, and I absolutely am in love with the graphics and the sounds this app makes. My favorite color theme is the brown with pink color scheme. It's an amazing word game that seems to not be as fast paced or as pretentious as other games of similar category. I find myself playing so many rounds at the same time, I'm definitely losing track of time playing this. The auto-match feature is great, and the lack of a messaging system in app is a welcome surprise (for me that is). There are a few friends I've made playing this game that were auto-matched using this app. It's so wonderful and addicting and my friends are all Hooked on this game. The only thing that I actually find confusing is the "invite" when I invite someone to play, or someone unites me to play, from Gamecenter, it appears to NOT connect and loses the invitation there are many friends that challenge me to this game but I have been able to play with NONE of them or visa versa. It could be an issue with my device? Or it could be a bug, but still that's one of the only things needed to fix this game.
