Very Satisfied

I’m using this app to learn Albanian and Bosnian. I would emphasize that you won’t become fluent just through using the app, and learning the language comes down to your own motivation and use of other resources too. This is by no means a criticism of this particular app, as I feel that apps like Duolingo also will not make you fluent.

However, I feel that the app is easy to use and is providing good information and a great starting point to guide my learning further. It doesn’t teach you every single word, but it gives you some important basic ones for each lesson. As I use it more I am beginning to understand some of the grammar rules by doing the conversation exercises and am picking up on certain nuances in the languages.

Overall I think this is a great app to use as a starting point. You will need to incorporate other resources if you truly want to become fluent, but it has been very helpful in guiding me. Other things I have added alongside the app include watching videos of native speakers and chatting with AI in Albanian to have real-world conversations in lieu of knowing people who speak Albanian. Don’t expect to become fluent using just one medium, but the app has only been beneficial for me.

Good customer service, faulty product

I was really excited to see that Ling offered Slovenian, which is a small language not available in most other formats. I had learned a very small amount already, and I quickly realized that while the written words for boy and girl, for instance, were the words I knew, the spoken words did not match. Turns out there are a couple of different ways to say girl and boy in Slovenian, and one way was used for the written word and the other for the spoken words. Slovenian pronunciation is already difficult for an English speaker; someone trying to match the spoken and written words would have no chance. I used the error-marking capability to mark these and other errors, but there were so many I finally gave up.

To their credit, when I reached out to Ling, they were really nice and very responsive, which is why they have a couple of stars. But to release a language, not as a beta but as something you pay for, when it has so clearly not been vetted at a very basic level, is really irresponsible. A gain, these were very basic errors on simple words that started at the beginning of the lessons. I just logged on to see if they’d been corrected, but they haven’t.

If you want me to help test a language, that’s one thing. But I decided to pay for a year, so ai think that was $60 I can’t get back. I’ve given them opportunities to fix the errors; time to delete the app and cut my losses.

Handy app to learn languages

Believe it or not, I remember first downloading this app in 2017 to learn Thai before my upcoming trip to Thailand 🇹🇭 Back then, it was pretty much the only app that offered Thai. But I learned a lot, especially getting my ears familiar to hearing Thai and practicing my pronunciation since the audio was so good.

Fast forward nearly 7 years later!!! I’m using this app to learn Georgian for another upcoming trip 🇬🇪 The app may look completely different from my first experience, but everything is SO much better! So many languages to choose from (still the best for Thai in my opinion 😋), clear audio from real people as opposed to AI, easy to use, and fun lessons to keep me interested. But not too fun that I get distracted from learning! You can also turn on/off the transcription feature for non-Latin languages, which is a great indicator of your language level. The app is also constantly adding new languages and features, which means there will never be a shortage of learning.

Highly recommend if you’re in the market for a language learning app, especially if you want to learn Southeast Asian languages! 👏

Sincerely disappointing experience

I downloaded Ling because it was the only app available with an Albanian course. That being said, my review is solely based on my experience with the Albanian course on Ling. The course is organized in a very strange manner and is riddled with an extreme number of errors. For instance, it tells you how the compound letter ‘gj’ sounds (like the ‘dj’ sound in jeans) and then gives an example word of xhep, which doesn’t have ‘gj’ in it at all. This type of error is commonplace throughout the lessons. The course starts by teaching you the words for boy, girl, man, and woman, which is sensible and similar to many other language courses. However, it then proceeds to teach you the words for twenty five, twelve, fourteen, and forty. How that random collection of numbers ever made sense enough to be approved and published is beyond me. The entire course needs to be edited and rearranged to make it even somewhat functional. One additional note, when I downloaded the app it said there was a free one week trial. However, when I downloaded the app it immediately charged me for a one year subscription. I would gladly pay for the subscription anyway, as I need to learn Albanian, but the way I was charged was dishonest at best. Moreover, with the current state of the Albanian course, I feel like I’m getting very little for the money. As the title of the review states, for me this has been a sincerely disappointing experience.

Decent only because there are no other options

I paid for a subscription for the year because there are not many options for Cantonese language learning apps. I’m giving it three stars because the app is satisfactory given that there really isn’t a better option out there. However, the lessons are simplistic and repetitive. It is good for learning to recognize Cantonese words and training listening comprehension, but it is not good for learning how to speak or write your own sentences. The review mechanism also leaves a lot to be desired. I would like to be able to quiz myself on all past vocabulary but there is are no flash cards. Your options are to click through the vocab cards and cover the English with your thumb, or to do (what seems like) a randomly selected set of review exercises that are not comprehensive. The app is also littered with errors. I have submitted around 10 error reports in my first week of studying. Often the English answer is grammatically incorrect or the Cantonese audio is mismatched with the jyutping/characters. I already know some mandarin, so I can spot the errors pretty easily (and they do not inhibit my learning), but I’m don’t know if a complete beginner could do the same. In short, the app has potential but is very, very rough.

Very Helpful App

I have tried many different types of Punjabi Learning courses from books to apps but they didn’t give me straightforward logical ways to retain the information. I had too many questions that never were presented as this app does. This app uses assumptions with reviews that helped me actually retain the lessons when I moved to the next lessons and exams. I highly recommend this app over any other platforms that I’ve personally tried. If you already know the Gurmukhi Oora Erra then don’t not use the transliteration aka romanized translation as I feel it is detrimental to your education. Reading Punjabi is the way to learn but the desktop version doesn’t allow to get rid of that confusing script. Gurmukhi is phonetic so do yourself a favor and don’t entertain the transliterations in romanization. Also the desktop version doesn’t sync with my phone app so when you pass lessons and exams it won’t update the phone version and you’ll have to redo those on your phone that I’ve experienced. I love this app because I’ve learned A LOT in just 16 days of using this app.
Thanks for your support.

I really love this app, but there are some serious bug issues

My best friend is from South Africa so I wanted to learn Afrikaans to surprise them. I got really far into the lessons and I’m learning so much. The one set back that has made me time and time again have to delete the app and re-download to reset is that it will skip me ahead in the lessons. This is only been happening for a couple months and I’ve found it has been happening since the latest update to the app. An example when I was redoing the exam for the introduction was the sentence “Ek praat Engles” (I speak English)
I put in the correct answer and hit continue but while I did that it suddenly skipped me ahead to another completely different sentence and marked me wrong. This keeps happening and it’s really frustrating as nowhere else can I learn Afrikaans, as many sites like Duolingo and Rosetta Stone say it’s “too close to Dutch and not a popular enough language to bother teaching.”
I will keep using the app as I paid for the yearly subscription but if someone could please look into the glitch I would really appreciate it. I don’t want to quit learning a language I’ve come to enjoy speaking because of a glitch. Thank you.

Tried to switch from Duolingo but was disappointed

I saw an ad for this app bashing Duolingo for using AI so I immediately downloaded it bc I enjoy how Duolingo works but not that they use AI. I realized I could customize things about the lessons and I enjoyed how they worked bc they were fun and helped me learn. However I was so disappointed that after the first lesson it’s ONLY Pro version. I don’t do free trials bc I forget them and things come up. This was why I used Duolingo bc I could get everything I wanted out of it while still being free. I didn’t mind ads for the pro version and I wouldn’t mind ads in this situation I just think that if you’re trying to compete with Duolingo, having a lot more available in the free version would help. I understand the need to use a Pro version to grow your company but I don’t feel inclined to get the Pro version after just one introductory lesson. Also I got all these bananas, maybe you could use them to open up new lessons? I really really want to like this app, but I can’t if I can’t progress anymore.

Developer Response ,

Hi! Thank you so much for your thoughtful and honest feedback. We truly appreciate you giving Ling a try and sharing your experience. We understand your concerns about limited free access and not wanting to start a trial. Currently, Ling offers the first unit for free to explore the app before subscribing, and the Pro version helps us maintain quality content recorded by real native speakers.

That said, your idea about using bananas to unlock content is fantastic! We’re actually working on features like ad-based content unlocks, though we can’t confirm exactly when they’ll launch. Your input will definitely be passed on to our team as we continue improving the app.

If you have more suggestions or need help, please reach out to support@ling-app.com anytime. – Recyl

Rare languages, some great features, but not ideal for beginners & some bugs

I’m a high A1/low A2 learner of Burmese who’s been studying using a variety of resources for a few years now. It’s hard to find an app that teaches Burmese, so I was pleasantly surprised to find one that does. I appreciate the dialogues, and the ability to turn transliterations and translations on and off. However, I don’t think the app would be ideal for beginners as the app never really requires you to learn 1:1 word correspondence. It teaches you the phrases “He sleeps” and “I go shopping” and never changes it up to “He goes shopping.” I’ve also done 12 lessons and found at least 4-6 errors in the app so far (no choices, audio not matching text, and possibly a misspelled word, though the last one could be my error). Still, even if the word for “go” changes spelling when used in sentences, it would be useful to have a note about this in the app. I also suspect that the app may be teaching how to speak written Burmese which differs from spoken Burmese, though I’m not proficient enough to know this for sure. It’s nice to have an organized app for Burmese learning, but I haven’t decided if the good outweighs the bad enough to continue after the free trial period yet.

its good but..

I stumbled upon a language called Georgian and it's a pretty hard language to me. This app was the only one I can find to learn Georgian and I'm pretty happy with it. But, one problem. Actually, two problems. The app is easy to use, although the alphabet area is not one whole lesson. It is just spread apart where I learn 4 letters at a time. Or 3, not sure. You also need to be completely perfect to be able to pass one part of the alphabet section. Me, as an digital artist, who is good at tracing, but when i completed it correctly, it stated i was wrong (not literally, it didn't turn the letter green indicating I did it right) which is crazy because I left no stray marks. Second problem. The lessons are easy except for the end where we need to memorize literal sounds of the words. There are 5-10 words. I can't do that yet. That is extremely hard to do because I don't know what the words mean at all yet. Plus, the app also doesn't teach us a word one by one. I believe the conversation part at the end of the lesson should be removed and added to the later lessons. Please fix this and thank you for reading if you do.

Hi GG! I’m very grateful for your feedback. It’s awesome to hear from Lingsters like you that our app is helpful and easy to use. I’m glad that our app can help you learn a new language in a simple and effective way with our language games to help you learn Georgian.

We’re always working to improve our app and add more languages and features. I want to make sure that you have the best possible experience with Ling and that you can learn any language you want. Writing is definitely something that can be contentious as there are many languages in which you are expected to write a letter in a specific pattern at a specific rhythm, so it isn't just making it look right to be right. Please let me know if you have any suggestions or questions by emailing me at support@ling-app.com. I value your opinion, and I’m here to support you. Cheers! Nick
