***BEST OF APP STORE 2012***
“London: A City Through Time” is neither coffee-table book nor guide nor map, but a nearly endless fusion of all three in a digital application, or “app”—nearly 2,000 years in the life of one of the world’s great cities. Even diehard Londoners are destined to discover something new - The Economist
"The best London history app we've ever seen" The Londonist
Whether a native Londoner, moving-in or just passing through, ‘London – A City Through Time’ is the perfect companion. Probably the most advanced and complete portrait of London ever produced, it offers an indispensable reference to the 2000-year history of the world’s most complex city. It boasts over 6000 articles on the capital’s museums, statues, buildings, streets, trades, people, parks, rivers and more. Over 2000 rare prints and photographs. Thirty-five video documentaries and clips from the archives of the Pathé movie library.
Historic panoramas of the city from the 17th Century to the 19th Century - all viewable as high-definition zoomable images, plus 70 gyro-controlled 360º views of the capital’s grandest sites. There are wonderfully detailed spinable artefacts from the Museum of London. It has audio tours to the haunts and hideaways of robbers and royalty from London’s official Blue Badge guides, and a unique history by tube stop section to let you know what’s above ground when your under it. Linking everything is a synchronised time-line to help navigate with unprecedented ease through every aspect of London’s deep and amazing history.

What an e-reference book should be
This is one of the most successful translations of a respected reference book to electronic format that I've ever seen, and I started as a regular user of CDROM atlases and encyclopedias in the 1980s. This, more than proably anything else released to date, really points the way to fully realizing the promise of a tablet to expand our conception of what a book can be and what it can do.
The depth of the source material is enhanced and illuminated by the app's rich multimedia components, and the illustrations, hyperlinks, and timelines provide an ideal means of exploring the first-rate history contained in the print version. Out just in time for London's Olympic close-up, this app is a great choice for anyone interested in the history of one of the world's great cities.
As for the nit-picking in some of the other reviews, I'd point out that this app is neither a game nor an academic textbook; the source book is written for the general reader and the app is designed to make that excellent material accessible and entertaining. If you love history and like it when an app really takes advantage of what your iPad can do you will not be disappointed.
A true pleasure
No sound problem for me - it can be turned on and off with the iPad's mute button. Hard to describe the depth of content. A favorite article so far is on the A-Z guide - I had no idea it was created by one woman who spent over a year walking 3,000 miles around the city. Have yet to submit my own "My London" pick, but am enjoying narrowing down my choice. Wonderful audio tours with 360 views of the sites discussed. Great period video files from pathe news - have esp. enjoyed the "Fluffies" (post-war women in charge of cleaning the Underground) and the 60s era futuristic model of the "new" Picadilly Circus (little, if any, of which came to pass). Makes me proud to have once lived in this extremely dynamic city.
A Virtual Treasure Box
Superb! Worth every cent. I got this for an upcoming vacation, but it is much more. It is brimming with historical information and the colorful detail I wanted. Rich design, clever, easy navigation, full of pictures, and even some old newsreels. It can be quick reference or a great way to just follow your curiosity. A fine way to explore London from anywhere. The opening narrative is good, but a written info page with more detail of what is included would be helpful, too. This is an app that just keeps giving.
