Individual projects

One thing you often hear is that people wait to be asked to help; we’re all busy, we don’t know what might need assistance or where our efforts might be of best use, we don’t want to join something and then regret it... so we don’t take action until someone asks us to.

The beauty of Magnify is that anyone (you! your kids! your grandparents!) can ask for help with something, and those of us who might like to be engaged in our community but might want to start small or with individual, discreet projects can answer the call—and all of it in our terms, without blasting anyone or knowing that if we agree we’ll be condemned to a lifetime of solicitations.

You hop on the app and type up what you’re working on, what you need, your plan of action, whatever—and wait for like-minded people to find your project and pitch in.

Or you hop on the app, poke around for something that fits your interests, values, etc., and know exactly what you’re signing on for, whether it’s a couple of hours helping with a one-time volunteer event, helping to research the best next steps for a problem, agreeing to write a letter to the editor or attend a meeting... And although of course you might find an ongoing project or organization that you want to commit to, you can also explore and do as much or as little as suits you.

You know how every now and then Nextdoor serves to actually solve a problem or help neighbors come together? Magnify is like that all the time!

Trust the people

I love MAGNIFY’s optimistic assumption that local people understand local needs and can affect meaningful change in their communities. It provides a vehicle to reach out to others with similar concerns. While the site includes some national projects, I found a local project only four miles from my home concerning the Hahamonga watershed. Given the general hysteria in much public discourse at the moment, I especially appreciate the reasonable tone of the postings. It’s refreshing to see that civil discourse is still possible .

This is what social media promised

Social media companies often began with a vision of bringing together communities to work together for shared interests. As we all know, that’s not how things have worked out.

But magnify is the version of social media we always wanted. It is a platform where we can come together, find friends with common interests, and work together to change the world. You and your organization should be looking to integrate this important tool to help build and strengthen your community.
