The Marine Debris Tracker mobile application and tool that allows you to help make a difference by telling us when you find trash on our coastlines and waterways. You can easily track and log marine debris items from a list of common debris items found on the beach or in the water. The app is a tool for any citizen, citizen scientists, and scientists. Data is kept and analyzed by the University of Georgia. The app records the debris location through GPS and you can view the data on your phone and submit to the Marine Debris Tracker Website for viewing and download later (requires registration, which you can do from the app). Your username is shown on the website for only the most recent 5 items tracked, but GPS coordinates are not shown. All downloadable and mapped data with GPS coordinates is shown anonymously to the public. You can also share your tracking data though a story on social media. More information is available on the website under "How do I Start Tracking?". Marine Debris Tracker is a joint effort of the NOAA Marine Debris Program and the Southeast Atlantic Marine Debris Initiative (SEA-MDI) out of the University of Georgia College of Engineering. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
We've made some major changes to the interface to improve the user experience. Now you can return to a logging session after saving it, create a section of favorite items, and login through SciStarter or Facebook. Uploaded photos are now compressed to improve speed, and your path can be submitted as well. Check out the settings dialog for more useful features.

Critically Important App!
Hands off to those at the University of Georgia for creating this app. I’ve found and removed hundreds of pieces of debris so far. Once you start actually paying attention to your environment, you see just how much trash there is. Everyone should have this app not only to clean their local environment but to also help researchers understand where debris is and how it is moving.
Fun, easy, and educational
I use this app with my family when we travel to the beach or the river. Easy to use, and my kids love seeing our data on the Debris Tracker map.
Who doesn't love a clean beach! This app is such a great idea and a MUST for anyone visiting the beach. Its very easy to navigate and its free! Keeping our oceans clean is a job we must do together, I give this app 5 stars.
