Marley Spoon
Ratings & Reviews
I have had two deliveries of Marley Spoon, and with my first box I noticed that some of the greens were bad, but I figured it was because the box had been sitting out all day until I got home and brought it in. With my second delivery, I messaged support and asked to cancel my box. They replied saying they would cancel it and refund me. Three days later I got an email saying my box was being shipped. When I emailed support again, they told me the cancellation hadn’t processed. Luckily I was refunded, but the box was sent anyway due to it already being on the way. I had requested to cancel the box, due to the fact that I was gonna be out of town, so I just had my roommate pickup the box and keep it. She sent me pictures of the produce tho, and again it did not look fresh and some of it was already browning. Lastly, I noticed a charge on my account this week and saw that I had been charged for a new box. I forgot to skip that delivery, so that was totally my fault, but not even 24 hours after they had charged me, I emailed them and asked if they could cancel it. Mind you, this was on a Sunday and my delivery day is Friday, so I didn’t see why they wouldn’t just cancel it. Well, I just got an email basically saying that they are not canceling it because the product has already been purchased and that they gave me enough warning. Which they did not by the way. If they had, I would’ve noticed that I hadn’t skipped the delivery earlier. Overall, I am extremely disappointed in Marley Spoon and have deactivated my account.
Developer ResponseHi! I’m so sorry to hear that these deliveries were not up to standards. Of course, this is not the experience we work tirelessly to provide, and we would love to use your feedback for active improvements. For this, please feel free to provide your comments to our customer care team at contact@marleyspoon.com, chat, phone call, or Facebook chat. Thank you in advance!
First, the good: We’ve been with Marley Spoon for over a year, and have loved the food! 5 stars for that! Really great recipes for the most part... a few are kind of average, but we’ve never had a meal we really didn’t like. I’d say more than half we really love. We tried Sun Basket first, but the recipes were too unusual for the tastes of our kids, and then we tried Blue Apron, but the recipes were to boring and bland for our tastes. Marley Spoon hit the right balance for our family. Occasionally there are some confusing recipe instructions, but mostly they are very easy to follow. Don’t order 4 meals in one delivery, as the box is too heavy and ingredients can get crushed. We’ve opened many boxes with a package of cream cheese, sour cream, or salsa squirted out all over everything. Now the bad, the reason for 3 stars, and the reason I’m ready to try a new service, probably Hello Fresh... order fulfillment is terrible. 1 star. I’d say at least 25% of orders have something wrong with them. It’s either busted open food packets, veggies that are on the brink of too old, or downright unusable, or the worst, missing ingredients. Nothing like being ready to make dinner for hungry kids and then having to run out to the store for a missing can of beans... AND during quarantine! To their credit, customer service has always been responsive, apologetic, and they give me credit for meals with problems. That and the delicious recipes kept me on their service for many months, but I’m sad to say it’s time to try someone new. We may be back if and when the reviews show these problems are behind them.
I’ve been using this service for almost a year now. The app is pretty easy to use and there’s no major issues that make me annoyed to the point that I would consider cancelling my account over the app. Now the customer support and quality of produce are very frustrating. The meals we received are pretty excellent meals, we save a lot of the recipe cards and have learned a few things. However it is VERY inconvenient when items are missing or the order is delayed. Customer service doesn’t work well with you and don’t address these issues properly. A big reason why we use this service is to avoid going to the grocery store last minute, which we can’t do when items are missing, so they give us little “credits” I.e. we recently didn’t receive the shallots or garlic in our order, so they gave us a 4 dollar credit. That’s great, but the health food store closest to my house charged us more than 4 bucks for a head of garlic and two large shallots. And I’m also out my time and gas. I just wish they understood the inconvenience and I wish we saw them work harder to make sure our box is correct, I’ve really never had this issues with other services especially on this level of repetition. We also have complaints with the quality of produce, however I’ve seen that improve some over time, now the bigger issue is they don’t package things properly, so for example sometimes they’ve sent a tomato or two in a plastic bin, during shipping with all the throwing around the tomatoes are free to bounce around in the bin, when we receive them they are so banged up that they feel like a plastic bag full of water, definitely too destroyed to actually cut or dice “normally”. So while they do have some issues, we still find the recipes worth while and quite good.
...but, like other reviewers have pointed out, not seeing recipes, or current meals offered, without giving credit card info., and paying for first delivery, is extremely disappointing. I’m eager to give Martha and Marley Spoon a try. I’ll check back once or twice more (with fingers crossed) to see if this problem has been resolved. If not, I’ll move on. I’m sure this will be the case with most potential customers. No one wants to give their credit card info., and pay for something, that they haven’t tried, can’t see, etc. That said, the app’s functionality and ease of use are seemingly top-notch. NOTE: I tried accessing menus via link/home page as was recommended to previous reviewer. I had no luck. Nonetheless, congrats to the developer of this app for a job well done. It’s a shame the app’s reviews seem to reflect user’s complete dismay with the setup of the meal service, specifically that it requires payment without providing menus, sample meals, etc., and not the app itself. The app deserves five stars. The meal service is what’s lacking here.
At first I was very excited to have theese meals. Food is very high quality and a good selection. The problem is their logistics. In just the last 5 weeks they changed the date of one delivery with no notice to me at all until I called to report missing meals and since they then delivered it on a day it was 90 degrees and we weren’t home all day the food had to be thrown out. And then I moved a delivery date to match when we cane home from vacation and they cancelled my following week’s delivery even though I had picked meals etc and again did not notify me that they cancelled it. To add on, they moved my following week’s delivery to a new date and again did not notify me. The answer I got when I called to report the missing delivery was that they tried to say they moved my delivery for yesterday to the date I got the delivery I had moved for the day I came home. I moved that one in the app. And then still picked meals for the following delivery which apparently I am not getting at all now with no communication. And my delivery for next week was moved again with no notice so its now being delivered in summer heat when no one is home - at least verify the date you are moving it to is ok. Or if the original date is not available due to logistics - DO NOT ALLOW PEOPLE TO SELECT IT. Don’t just move it and not tell people. People plan their shopping around this and it a huge inconvenience to people to have to plan and shop for a weeks worth of meals at the last minute when they expected that it was taken care of. Do not sign up for this service. The quality of the food and recipes doesn’t make up for the unpredictability and the utter lack of concern they have for their lack of organization.
Developer ResponseHi there, thanks for your feedback and taking the time to rate our service. We're sorry for the experience that you've had, this is not what we strive to provide. Rest assured that your feedback has been shared internally to ensure improvement. If you need anything, don't hesitate to reach out to our customer care team. Kind regards.
I created an account to be able to see what meals they offer. After reviewing the options, it want a good fit for what I want in a meal kit delivery service. Within 5 minutes of creating the account (and adding payment information since it’s talked go be able to create an account and therefore see the meals), I cancelled. Since the account was created after the window to cancel orders (but apparently not to place them?) an order was submitted and I was charged despite no longer, and frankly not even initially, wanting the meals they had to offer. Upon reaching out to customer service to resolve this, I was told there wasn’t anything they’d do to refund or cancel the order and the charges stood. There was no options given, only references to their ordering policy; it felt like a scam to get money even if you don’t want their services. I ended up having to dispute the charge with my credit card provider instead and am still awaiting decision on that when a simple refund would’ve fixed the problem entirely. I would not recommend them.
