Getting there

My reason for a 5 star review is their “Question of the Day” feature, which gives you a streak for every day you get the question right, and let’s you see your standings vs all the other students on the app. After the question, you get an explanation as to which answer choice was correct and why the rest were wrong. This feature ropes me in daily and then motivates me to sit there and answer at least few more questions through their other game modes.

Why I said “getting there” is because when I first downloaded the app, it was relatively new and the UI was not nearly as nice as it is now. On top of that, a lot of questions did not have full explanations, which over time has stopped happening. I’ve experienced all these changes while being a free user. This app is still relatively new, but at the rate it is improving, it will definitely become one of the most powerful mobile tools you can utilize in studying for your MCAT.

Great for quick content review, but other features need work

Love this app for quick questions here and there when I can’t bust out my full study setup. The questions are great at helping you identify subject areas you need to work on which is huge for the MCAT as there’s so much content. They have plenty of documents/visuals associated with major subjects on the MCAT which is also really helpful.

I do think the flash card area needs some work. If I study one deck that I made, buttons similar to anki pop up where I can decide to repeat the card in one minute, 10 minutes, or 4 days. However when I try to select multiple decks this feature disappears. The feature also does not exist for their pre loaded decks, and for this reason I’ve been using anki instead of the feature in app. Deck management is also difficult. I accidentally made two decks with the same name and I can’t delete one or transfer the cards to another deck.

The game feature is really fun if you have other friends also studying for the MCAT. It gives trivia crack vibes! However if you don’t, it’s extremely hard to play with another user as most won’t play back. I think they need to improve their notification system for that.

Most used app currently

This app is exactly what I needed to stay accountable. This whole COVID situation has had an impact on my motivation, as I'm sure it has for many other pre-meds. As such, I was looking for something to keep me motivated and accountable. Since I've been glued to my phone for the past month, I decided it would be beneficial to delete all social media apps and put this one on my home screen. Probably the most sound decision I've made lately. I still have about 6 months to go before test date. This app sets up a 30 or 60 day study plan for you. I'm using the 30 day plan to jump-start my studies. With the seemingly overwhelming quantity of information to review, it's nice to have some guidance and take some of the planning work out of the equation. Beneficial for every pre-med looking at taking the exam soon. Yes, you'll need supplemental material, but it's definitely a good way to jump start the journey.

Great for on the go learning

I have used both the free version and the highest paying version of this app. I have a busy schedule as a full-time employee at a cafe and a part-time student. Studying for the MCAT with KOTC at work, after I wake up, or right before bed makes MCAT studying so much easier. It takes away a lot of my stress of having to find time to pull out ALL of the prep books and set everything up just for 30-45 minutes of studying, based on how much of a break I can get from work. I liked the free version but I LOVE the paid version. It really just depends on how much you want out of it, and whether this is your primary mode of studying. Unfortunately, we live in a reality where almost all MCAT resources cost money (A LOT OF MONEY); however, I think KOTC is actually a pretty valuable resource for on the go learning.

Do Not Use

There are multiple wrong answers throughout that will cause you to second-guess myself. I was using the app daily, but don’t feel that it’s actually helpful with all the errors. Having to do a Google search to confirm that I was correct and the given answer was wrong is not conducive to effective studying. Some of them feel so easy too… one I remember was asking about what form of radiation has less penetration than gamma rays… it’s literally all of them, so how can this even be a question? Every answer choice is correct. I clicked “x-rays” and got it wrong. Makes no sense. Apart from that, there are a variety of bugs that also help to ruin the experience - one of the biggest being that when you submit a quiz, it’ll change around your answers and mark things wrong that you got right, and vice versa. This same problem is referenced in older reviews, which means that fixes are either not coming fast enough or being ignored altogether. This app is causing significantly more confusion in my study process, and was a complete waste of money - STAY AWAY!!

YOU HAVE TO GET THIS!

lil_jalebiii: So right now I'm actually studying for the MCAT by sections but every night I play this for maybe 15-30 minutes before I sleep and it makes me remember past concepts and high yield information that I might of forgotten. It’s great to use no matter where you are in studying like for after content review or for space repetition. And if you’re just starting, it can be a good baseline diagnostic for content areas. It actually tell you the subject and Sub-content name so if you get questions wrong you know which areas you need to study or recap on. And if you review questions you got wrong it breaks down each answer choice so you know how to fix your thought process. It’s a great supplemental source that makes learning fun! I highly recommend this in your routine for studying.

My experience

this app was all over my Instagram feed and it advertised to be good content practice. I got it a low price, as I’m a first generation student with very few funds and can’t afford classes like Princeton or Kaplan. I used it a lot, and thought it to be a great review, but it grossly unprepared me for many sections of the mcat. I went back to the app after I took my mcat, and there’s some terms that aren’t even on the app that are high yield topics on the mcat.
on top of that, it’s also becoming quite expensive. I thought this would be the competition to uworld and help people like me get access to good content for a lower price. instead it’s becoming quite pricey and again, it grossly unprepared me. if you’re looking for an app to just review, have a little game to kinda study but not STUDY study, this is the app for you, but look for other resources.

Cool idea, but not worth the cost

Tl;dr app has potential, but there are much better tools and apps out there for MCAT review, and it’s really not worth the price.

I bought the app because I loved the idea of a content review app focused on discrete questions. However, as someone with both MCAT experience (taken it, currently tutor it) and a computer science background, it needs major improvements and is really not worth the $9.99 subscription fee.

The content emphasized by mine isn’t the most “high yield” on the MCAT (a weirdly high number of question on HMR terminology, which is really low yield on the exam). The explanations afterward are sometimes vague or wrong, or outright missing.

In terms of the interface, it’s really hard to read the light gray text of the explanations, and the answer options get cut off. After doing a round of 60 questions, I don’t remember the choices and can’t even see what the correct answer is. The occasional obvious misspelling of words is just irritating. These are pretty obvious UI/UX problems that should have been fixed before the app went live and definitely before it started charging money.

I applaud the effort of the developers and appreciate how hard it is to start an app from scratch and wish them the best of luck as they develop their app. As a consumer though, I’m not ready to recommend it.

Try Anki (free) or MCAT Mastery and UWorld (paid).

Lied to about Subscription Cost + Not worth it

I saw an ad on social media saying if I downloaded the app, I would be able to subscription for free for a year. I saw the same thing as I subscribed to the app, but little did I know I would be charged three days later and for the next few months for a service I barely used.

In terms of the app, I found it to be not as helpful as other free resources online. There are plenty of free anki flash card decks that are more useful than these that you don’t need to pay for. Khan academy gives you a free thorough summary of topics, and the AAMC bundle is without question the most useful question bank you can have. This app is great concept and can improve, but it is absolutely not worth $10.

The plethora of free resources that are available are far superior to this app. It is not worth the money or the potential for you to be unknowingly charged after being promised a free product for a year.

Developer Response ,

Hello!

Thank you for the review, but everything you said is simply not true. On our product page, it clearly states that the first three days are free (acting as a free trial). In addition, when you go to purchase, it will state that you will be charged three days later. You either didn't read it or ignored this fact. You can also read our Terms of Service where it talks about subscriptions. I apologize for the inconvenience you faced. Good luck on your MCAT, future doctor!

Good concept, way too many bugs and poorly made questions

I bought the premium version of this app so that I could enjoy doing some MCAT related questions. However, there are so many bugs and questions with either no answer explanations or even incorrect answers. Every time you review a question, it always says you chose another answer choice than the one you put. One question had explanations of what myopia and hyperopia were and it was an organic chemistry question. When you want to play a friend, it sometimes bugs out and skips a person’s turn. The concept is good, but the amount of bugs and terrible content/explanations make it not really worth it. I’m glad the creators are doing well in this app cycle, but it seems as if it was rushed just so they can tell adcoms they created an MCAT study app. Please fix these bugs and bad questions as I genuinely do want to use a viable version of this app.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your review! We will work on correcting these questions and other bugs and keep you updated. Please consider changing your review once the new version is out :)
