- Harmonics adjusts the richness of the generated waveform and modulating it sounds similar to filter sweeps
- Great sounding noise oscillator, which sounds warmer than pure white noise
- Other features: transposition, tuning, pan and level

Filters
- Selection of great sounding self-oscillating resonant filters
- Ability to morph between low-pass, band-pass and high-pass

Modulation Matrix
- Both Mela and Mela FX come with a fully featured modulation matrix
- Most parameters of the audio units can be modulated
- Modulation sources: envelope generators, envelope follower and LFOs
- MIDI sources: velocity, key, mod wheel, aftertouch and pitch bend
- The matrix supports both positive and negative modulation intensities

Routing
- Oscillators can be routed to filters in 5 different ways
- FX section can be inserted before filter 1, after it or after both filters

Audio Unit Extension Features
- Customisable perform view that gives you access to the parameters you care about most
- Highly flexible layout, makes the best use of the space provided by the host's window

What’s New

Version 2.4

Text Input:
- Renamed the "Number Pad" menu item to "Enter Value", as the user is now able to enter values using either the Apple Pencil or a hardware keyboard.
- The text input, for naming presets or entering decimal values for parameters, now has a new mode. If a hardware keyboard is connected to the iPad or the Apple Pencil is used for text entry, the text field dialog appears in the middle of the screen. Otherwise, the text field will appear above the virtual typing keyboard, as before.
- Improved the look of the Text Input UI.
- Disabled the Rename button when a preset with the same name already exists.
- Fixed a bug where pressing the Enter button on the virtual keyboard didn't do anything.

Settings:
- Settings view has been fully rewritten and has a refreshed look.
- Accessing settings inside the Mela or Mela FX audio unit no longer launches the Mela app.
- You can change the color theme or email feedback from within the audio units' interface.
- Added a TestFlight link for those users who want to actively participate in providing feedback during the Mela development process.

User Interface State:
- Selected module tabs will now be stored as part of the preset. Preselect the module tabs that you think are the most relevant for the preset before saving it.
- Added document UI state restoration. When the host saves the audio units' states as part of a session, the visibility states of the Mela views will also be stored.
- The User Guide view now retains the document position. So, now you can easily dismiss and present it multiple times, as you explore Mela and not worry about having to find the same section again in the user guide.
- When the Preset Browser loads, it preselects the group that was last used.

Other Changes:
- Deleting groups and preset menu items now have a destructive action appearance.
- To prevent accidental data loss, added a confirmation dialog when deleting a preset or group.
- Fixed various bugs associated with deleting a preset group.
- Updated the user guide.
- Added new presets.

It is awesome!

But why iOS14? Sorry to complain about this but given how much worse performance gets on an iDevice that has been updated to ANY OS it didn’t come with, it would be great if the threshold could be lowered to at least iOS 12. I am sure there are a few features there that are iOS 14 only but the question is, are these needed?

I am lucky i can run this on my iPhone on iOS 14.2 which I updated because it had to be restored because of an issue it had. I am not so lucky because I can’t use it on my brand new iPad on iOS 13.7 and although the app is great I am certainly not gonna update the OS just to run a few more apps. Not when the exchange for that is having a substantially worse iDevice because of Apple’s sketchy ways.

For now I’ll just have to use Mela 2 on my phone and connect that to the iPad.... eventually I’ll just have to get a new iPad a few years down the line 🤷🏻‍♂️.

Anyway, if the OS threshold can be lowered that would be awesome. This is still a fantastic app though! If you’re iOS 14.+ rooted you should definitely check it out.

PS: cheers for the iPhone interface, it is beautiful and practical!

Developer Response ,

Very happy to hear you like the interface on the iPhone, thank you 🙏.

Regarding supporting older versions of iOS, this is always a tough decision to make. I know some users are stuck on older devices that can't upgrade to the latest iOS. But I have very limited resources. Supporting and testing Mela on older iOS versions on multiple devices and ensuring they all work fine in all AUv3 hosts is hard to justify. Additionally, the app uses iOS 14 only features. So, writing code to incorporate the same functionality on older devices requires significantly more resources. I’d rather focus my efforts on adding new features to Mela.

Immediately impressed!!

I literally just bought the synth about five minutes ago and I am super stoked about it already. As I am skipping through some of the presets I am very pleased with the sound. Truly better than the first version, at least to my ears anyway. Very organic sounding. I can’t wait to really dig in and see what kind of sonic capabilities this has. If I had any gripes I wish the onscreen keyboard was a bit bigger and a reverb would be nice. Either of those aren’t a huge deal though. I can always hook up my midi keyboard and I can always use one of the reverbs I picked up on the App Store.

Developer Response ,

Thank for an amazing review :) Really happy to hear you like the synth. And thanks for the feedback. I’m considering having an option to increase keyboard size. As for the reverb, it’s definitely a feature I’d like to add at some point.

Amazing!!

I’ve tried just about every synth available for the iPad and always thought none of them compare to Zeeon. I’m happy to say that’s no longer true. This synth is a powerhouse! It’s hard to get a bad sound out of and the routing options are insane. I’ve rarely been so inspired before even learning half of the functions. 5 stars, no question. The fx version with the filters and modulation capabilities are just the icing on a fantastic cake.
