Description

This software is compatible with Mac OSX Version 10.6 (Snow Leopard) up to 10.15 (Catalina).
It is NOT compatible with OS 11.x (Big Sur) and Later.
----------------------

MiJournal supports: Pictures in entries, Drag and drop videos into entries, full des3 encryption, password protection, Syncing (via drop box), importing from other apps, and instantaneous search through DECADES of entries. It has ALL the features you would want in a Diary App, without the clutter of esoteric features found in some other apps.

MiJournal is rich with features and options that will help you organize your thoughts, and keep a daily journal / diary. This journal app is much like your old paper journals, but much better in the sense that you can back it up, drag digital photos and videos into your entries, protect it with a password, and even encrypt your diary entries. Plus, you have an unlimited number of Journal Entry pages!

With MiJournal, you can drag and drop photos, images, videos, sound clips - even links to emails and iCal items into your daily journal entries. Unlike some other journal apps, MiJournal allows you to resize the images too.

MiJournal allows you to search for journal entries in seconds. A decades worth of daily journals can be searched in 1 second! Also, you can use complex search techniques (Regular expressions) to find exactly what you are looking for. Few other journal apps offer this feature.

MiJournal is Secure using strong encryption to protect your journal entries. Also, MiJournal allows you to password protect the entire app.

MiJournal lets you store your Journal Entry database in any location you want. MiJournal seamlessly integrates with dropbox for syncing your journal with other mac computers. Also, if you sync with dropbox, your journals are backed up (they are also be additionally backed up with Time Machine if you are using that). With this many layers of backup, you should never lose an entry!

We love Macs for their simplicity and ease of use; we believe that your 3rd party software should be the same. Your apps should be intuitive to understand as soon as you start using them. MiJournal strives to maintain the balance of being loaded with features, having some eye candy, and being really easy to use. We are committed to your satisfaction, and always welcome suggestions and feature requests!

Quick & Easy but Limited

I have been using this app almost daily for about 4 months, and it works well, but there are things I think it could do better:
First, by using the entire screen on my MacBook Air 11 inch, it is hard to find any text amidst a long journal entry. Even if I have moved the cursor to make a correction, I struggle to find it after I've made the correction.
The single spacing makes finding text even harder. I wish I could set a format that double spaced or allowed other options to make text easier to navigate.
While I have selected "AutoSave" in the Preferences, it doesn't.
Searching entries is a simple search on keywords and is, therefore, very limited and makes it hard to really find anything. It would be nice if there were categories or topics that could be searched rather than just searching on specific words.
The app lets you give a title to a journal, but not to any particular entry within the journal. Often, I would like to give an entry a title because I use my journal entries to capture ideas and thoughts for my more formal writing and publishing, but being able to search notes only by date or words within the text makes old entries extremely difficult to find.
Even though I have complained aabout several things, I do pretty much like this app and continue to use it. I hope that the publisher will consider some of my comments and perhaps upgrade the app to perform a few more of the functions I have mentioned.

Developer Response ,

Hi Paul - Thanks for writing a review. I appreciate that you are having trouble on a Mac Air 11" screen. One possible solution would be to highlight the entire entry and then press "Command and the plus (+)" key on your keyboard. Doing this will make things bigger and easier to manipulate, including helping with cursor placement.

Auto Save conducts the save any time you change the view of the window - so if you click to another entry, or if you close the window, everything gets saved. This feature works very reliably, so if you want to contact me to describe your issue, please do so using the "App Support" link.

Search is actually extremely robust with MiJournal. There are two types of search, and they are both in the Edit Menu. For the first, simple search, you can just search on a page (i.e. single entry). To do that go to Edit>Find>Find On Page. This will find a word on the active entry. But you can also search the entire MiJournal database. Go to Edit>Search Journals. From there, you get a new window and you can do a "Ends with, Contains, Begins with, Entire word" search. Not only that, but you can click the check box for "Regular Expressions" and do very complicated searches like an "AND" or an "OR" search. For example, to find an entry that contained the words "happy" or "journal", you could type "happy|journal" into the search field, and every entry that contains either one of these words will show up in the result. You may need to look up "regular expressions" to find out what other search operations you can use - there are quite a few complex options!

Meh

I bought this app because I wanted a journal app that allowed me to attach videos. This one allows that, but everything else about this app is unimpressive. There are no font options, resizing the photos is not convient, the words don’t wrap around the photos and there’s no way to export your entries/journal. The looks of the app is not pleasurable. It doesn’t make me feel inclined to write in it. It looks like something from the 90’s. I had hopes that this app would improve over time, but it hasn’t. I’ve used the app for several months and I just don’t have the desire to open it up and use it. I’m a modern clean lines kind of person that is artistic. This app doesn’t go along with that at all. Needless to say, I’m going to be taking my entries out the hard way and putting them into a new journal app that I purchased today; which looks much better. Only downfall is I’m losing the capability to attach videos and that is the only thing this app has going for it. Wasn’t worth the money I paid for it and now paid for another app that doesn’t have the function I was really looking for. It was just time to move on with or without video attachments.

Developer Response ,

Hi Cridlebaugh05 - I've been eager for Apple to allow Developer Responses so I could get in touch with you about your review. First, I'm sorry that you were not happy with the app, but I think I can fix some things for you. For fonts, please go to the menu bar and click on "Font". This will let you change the font in all sorts of imaginative ways. Alternatively, click "Comand + T" on your keyboard to get to the fonts menu. Also, it sounds as if you plan to move to another journal for aesthetic reasons. That makes sense, as everyone has a different appreciation for the look and feel of an app. In order to transfer your entries, you can open the folder that contains the database of entries. Assuming that your entries are not encrypted, you can then import them using the import feature of many other competing journal apps - you just have to point them to the database. If you haven't moved the database, by default, it is located in ~/Application Support/MiJournal/

Not all competing journal apps have an import feature, but this is how it would be done. Alternatively, the app has a print feature where you can print all of the journals to paper OR you can save to PDF. That would be another way to export the entries. Finally, with regard to the money: You can go into the App Store and click "Report a problem" and ask Apple for your money back. If I could, I would do it for you, but unfortunately, that is out of the developer's control.

clunky

What a waste of $15. I NEVER spend that kind of money on an app, but there are few journaling apps out there, and this one had good reviews. I suppose if encrypting is the most important feature for you, then this is what you want. But if you want an intuitive, attractive journal app, then skip this one. You can’t design your template in the app; you have to design it elsewhere then import it. For $15, I expected to be able to click and drag a photo from Photos (Mac), then resize it by grabbing a corner. Nope. Couldn’t even click and drag it from Photos on my Mac into the app. First I had to drag it to the desktop, then drag it into the app. Then resize it from a dropdown menu, where I didn’t get a clear image. The text will not wrap around a photo like it does in Pages. I’ve already wasted too much time and money on this app. If you have a Mac, just use Pages. You can password protect it plus you will have a much more intuitive program that looks beautiful too.
