Perfect retro style, gameplay a bit 2 simple
Seeing the video, and initially playing the game brought me back to the 80s and 90s and my Commodore 64. The developer has captured that theme perfectly. But after playing the game for a while it feels like it is too simple.
You are very much a victim to the luck of the draw, and have very few choices as the action heats up. Games that rely heavily on randomness such as RNG or card decks need to give the player room to plan and maneuver. This game doesn't do that, and it is also quite unforgiving. So it makes gameplay a bit frustrating and disappointing for me. If the developer could add a stronger strategy component I would be comfortable giving it five stars.
Fun, challenging, cute game!
Missile Cards is super fun! The premise is simple; you have to prevent hazards (giant space rocks, mostly) from destroying your space station by zapping them with lasers or missiles. The tricky bit is that both the hazards and the tools you are given to dispatch them come out of the same deck of "cards"; you can only see four of them at a time, and after a hazard is played, you only have five turns to handle it before it slams into your base, possibly ending the game (or maybe just ending Dome 2's chances of winning the annual botanical garden competition).
Missile cards does a really great job of creating strategic tension without swamping the player with a cacophony of inputs and decisions. You have to make choices - hard ones - ("Sorry, Dome 2...") but the mechanics of the game give you time to consider them and come up with clever answers if you're able.
I recommend this game without reservation to anyone who likes tabletop games, puzzles, or imagining that you're the grizzled administrator of a maybe-possibly-not-entirely-doomed space habitat making the tough calls.
Unfortunately this game, while it has a decent look and feel, and an interesting theme , starts off much too slowly. Perhaps it gets more interesting later but the first level , which you have to go through at least a few times to complete the mission goals to pass it, is a slow and very boring grind. Most player actions there are just clicking "skip turn", waiting for something to happen.
Pace & action doesn't really pick up by level 3 . Game could really use instruction or at least info - what's the difference between missiles and the regular guns? Just the "no missiles" goal?
Weird that you score highest when the comers are closest to your base... irl it would be the other way around ? Ok it's just a game but that set up adds to the waiting / skip yet another turn chore aspect of the game if you want to maximize your score
