Even smaller app size: 13MB deployed archive for both Apple and Intel chips. Fresh macOS installs pickup even more file types, this is all you need to quick edit files.
If you come from the Windows world, you may be missing a small utility: Notepad, a simple but essential tool for editing plain text files. While macOS counts on its own built-in text editor: TextEdit, it is actually more like a Rich Text Editor with full images, fonts and layout support. Similar to the built-in Windows Write or WordPad.
It kind of feels heavier than it should and in the way. There are known settings to make it look and feel lighter, but inside it's still the same. You can get the source and peek inside. It's bigger and with older code than it needs to be.
Moped intends to give a Windows Notepad feel, while being a full native of macOS, with a touch of modern syntax highlight and themes.

This was tested under fresh macOS installs of Big Sur and Monterrey, picking even more file types on top!

This is what you want
Go click "Get" and read this review while you wait: I never thought that Microsoft was genius for including Notepad as a default since the beginning, but in hindsight, they were onto something!
Not only is this the right tool for the job, but Roberto Machorro is an amazing developer: This app is precisely, meticulously designed, to NEVER get in your way — crafted with pride by a talented artisan. And you know this will never turn into a subscription, because the developer is making this GPL/open source. So what are you waiting for??
PS: The Mac App Store review box was driving me crazy, so I wrote this review in Moped before pasting it in the Mac App Store ;-)

Thank you and enjoy!
Simple and Clean Notepad App
I tried many Windows Notepad-like apps in the App Store and they all were decent, but always seemed to lack some random basic function (e.g. word wrap on/off, etc).
This app, though, provides everything I needed. But I noticed that when I save my changes, the app refreshs and scrolls to the top of the file. Then I have to find my place again. All thanks to a decades-long, paranoia-driven habit of saving frequently (hitting Crtl-S is so easy to do on Macs and PCs).
Anyway, this app is perfect. 5 stars. Thanks!

Thanks! A fix is in the works for that “save refresh” issue, stay tuned!
Great simple little replacement for Notepad on Macs
I'm not sure why Macs don't come with something comparable to the Windows Notepad, but this is it. Really simple way of creating text files in a folder to keep track of notes and similar things were a Word doc is just total overkill.
