Ratings and Reviews
First impressions of Pitch Painter
I like the idea of the different colors for different instruments. As a teacher, I had a few doubts about the pedagogical value of the app. My first experience was that students want to fill in the whole square, mixing different colors. What they come up with is a cacophony that isn’t really teaching them composition. There should probably be an adjustment to the app that limits them to single or double lines for each instrument, so that they will be encouraged to write linear melodies. The price was also a bit high.

Excellent way to allow children to explore music!
I am a long time fan of the work that Morton Subotnick has done not only as a cmompser and electronic music pioneer, but as a software developer. I used all of his titles when I was a music teacher, and I especially admired the interface that this app employs - allowing children to compose music by drawing it with their fingers. The iPad is the PERFECT device for this concept, and I am thrilled with the way that he has transported his concept to the iPad. The interface is beautiful and children as young as 2 or 3 can simply pick it up and start composing. No instructions required, really. My 7 year old daughter loved playing with it - and it held her rapt attention for 20 minutes. That's priceless in my opinion.
Well done to Mort and the developers for bringing this to the iPad! Teachers everywhere should use this with their younger students.
