Description

munch is a delightfully simple way to dine at Michigan State University (MSU) in East Lansing. Designed at the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD), munch will help you find food you want to eat, make informed decisions about what you do eat and maybe even make new friends along the way.

munch enables the following:

- MENUS: customized to your dietary needs & wants. Filter by dietary preference, food category, sort by nutritional content, search for exactly what you want and then log it to the Health app on iPhone. If you loved what you ate, favorite it! We’ll send you a notification the next time any caf serves it again. We won’t stop you from favoriting everything.

- TIES: Spartan Ties is a unique way to make friends and meet other Spartans while you’re at MSU. Join members of the MSU Tower Guard Honor Society and the Delta Gamma fraternity for weekly dinners at one of the dining halls on campus. Spartan Ties is designed and organized by students, for students.

- & MORE: Detailed hours, occupancy and Siri shortcuts. munch also Find exactly where that dish you want is being served and how busy it typically is where it’s being served. Easily contact EatAtState staff and chefs.

What’s New

Version 1.91

Hope you’re doing well since our last update!

This ones a doozy. We’re calling it - “Bob’s update”, after a review left by a gentleman (probably) with the handle “Bob is unhappy”. A befitting appellation, as they were clearly uh ... unhappy with our work and requested menus for multiple dates. Sorry Bob, it just took a wee bit o’ time to do things the right way. If you, dear reader, like the changes below, you have Bob (and so many others that requested them) to thank. While we’ve taken great efforts to test every aspect of this update, we’re not infallible. Be like Bob and let us know if we’re missing something you want to see. If you encounter any issues or have comments about the app, please iMessage or email us at guide@rcpd.msu.edu. If you have dietary concerns, please contact a dining hall manager within munch or reach out to dietitians@rhs.msu.edu.

- Tap a date or simply swipe left/right on a menu to advance to an adjacent date. Obviously, this works with VoiceOver & Switch Control just as quick. If you’ve favorited dishes, dates will have a little green indicator when a favorite is available. You may see menus for 3 to 10 days ahead. We use past menu data to prevent showing a menu that is likely to drastically change.
- Now, we don’t intend to leave you with thousand of dishes to sift through across multiple menus. Nope, that’s best left to munch’s creators … For you, we’re introducing the ability to search menus. You don’t need to know dish names. Craving something with pasta in it? Search for pasta and we’ll figure out which dishes have any kind of pasta in ‘em! Want to only see soups with garlic in 'em, type in “soups garlic” and just swipe, swipe, swipe through. There’s a lot more we’re working on with search, so do let us know if you have a specific way you’d like to find food!
- Note that menus are subject to change. If you browse menus often, and an item that was presented to you has been taken off the menu, we now display them in a list atop the current day’s menu. Note that, this will only show IF menu items for the current day were 86’d.
- This update ends support for iOS 12. Apologies for the inconvenience! If your only device can't update past iOS 12, do let us know and we'd be happy to re-consider this change.
- Added context menus and previews for menu items. Simply long press any dish if you don’t want to click through (useful during searches! )
- Custom VoiceOver rotors for meals and dates to instantly jump to menus.
- If you speak computer, we now use a lot of SwiftUI and so while the app may look the same to you, it is literally written in another language ,well, dialect perhaps… you get the idea.
- In some cases, if you were viewing a dish’s nutrition info, then switched to the settings tab and changed your allergens, the dish’s allergens warning would not update. This is now fixed. Thank you Mikayla!
- Fixed timetable countdown showing an incorrect hour count if you swipe up and force quit on all your apps. You do know that swiping apps like that just kills your battery faster, right? We’re not kidding.
- Fixed interface size errors on iPads.
- Fixed notification settings from settings app/notifications not working right

We’re sorry this update took a while if you requested any of the above features.

Developer Response ,

Thank you so much for the positive feedback despite the apps age. Yes, we are indeed working on an update - if there’s anything in particular you’d like to see in an update, please imessage us from the app or update the comment with details!

View Next Day

The app design is clean and it’s more thorough than the MSU app version of the menus, but unlike that app, this one doesn’t allow you to view the next day’s menu. And if you can, then improve the design because I’ve pressed just about everything.

Developer Response ,

Sorry you’re unhappy Bob! We will soon have multi day menus, with nutrition facts and a way to find foods easier very soon.
EDIT:
Well “soon”took a bit longer than we thought 🤷‍♀️. But we now have menus that show days ahead and whether menus have changed. We’re happy to make more changes if you’re still unhappy, so do let us know Bob. 😊

Poor search tools

1) Menus for dining halls are frequently unavailable
2) No way to search across dining halls for a desired item or ingredient. You have to do a separate search for each dining hall just to see if any are serving the ingredient you’re looking for.

Developer Response ,

1) hmm… all menu availability issues should be resolved. If you’re still unable to access them - iMessage us from within the app!

2) Yep we agree this is awful if you’re looking to avoid an ingredient. So we will be addressing this soon. But if you’re specifically looking *for* an ingredient I’m afraid what we’re working on may not fit the bill either - we really hope you message us with more details of your use case and we promise it’ll be worked on!
