"The Dallas Winds has used MMR at our summer band camp and the kids loved it. Their reading improved remarkably over just a week.

The Monster Musician Reader, the world's first interactive game that targets and builds the skills necessary for successful music reading. The musician plays her or his instrument or sings directly into the app and gets evaluated on their performance in real-time. Really though, it's just a game. As creator and pro-musician, Noelle Fabian puts it, "Imagine if your sheet music and the video game "Guitar Hero" had a baby. It's epic."

Based on sight reading and language research, specifically designed curriculum familiarizes the player with different rhythmic combinations and intervals. Backing grooves provide the player with a beat while music scrolls across the screen. Great for musical speed-reading. For an extra challenge- pick a tricky key! The goal is to "feed" our friend "Hangry Jim" your right notes as you go. You are then awarded a score from Jim based upon your performance. Don't like your score? Play it again!

The app itself and the first few books are no charge.
Additional books can be purchased in the "music store".

Some basic music knowledge/ability is recommended when starting to play as this is a supplement to other forms of instrumental practice. Using headphones also helps with increased accuracy. While the app can be played by any person or instrument able to sustain a pitch, we currently have the app optimized for woodwinds and brass instruments.

Our current, yet ever-increasing, optimized instrument list:

# Voice (bass clef, treble clef)

Lots of promise!

There are lots of things to be excited with Noelle's new app. I am excited to see an app that is more age-appropriate and more accessible than its rivals (think sight reading factory or SmartMusic).

That said, I'm rating it 4 stars more for what it will be than what it currently is. In its current state, it's more like a 3-star app. The price is a bit on the high side. The flashing cursor lags behind the beat which could cause confusion for the student m. It did for me. I ultimately had to ignore it, though I later saw that this function can be disabled. However, the beat and notes still don't line up perfectly. Also, some of the lines are a bit long early on, though that may be more nitpicky than a true critique. I would also add that, though most books begin with wholes moving to quarter, I would suggest reversing that and having quarters move to whole notes. I use Darcy Vogt-Williams Teaching Rhythm Logically curriculum and I think that approach keeps kids more interested in the initial stages.

Truly, I am excited to see where an app of this calibre will go. It shows a lot of potential and I am fortunate to provide my two cents in feedback. Best of luck, Noelle!

Developer Response ,

Excellent feedback! Thank you so much for taking the time to comb through the app. Since everything is so new, this is just a starting point so feedback is super important to us. Please reach out to me and email themmreader@gmail.com. I would love to ask you a few more questions and continue our correspondence.

Fun game for sight reading, highly recommend

I’m a piano teacher and I love using this app with my students. It’s got a lot of game-like qualities so it’s a hit with younger students and I myself enjoy playing with the app just using my voice (great for sight-singing!). I’ve used other apps like Rhythm Cat but this one is much comprehensive and allows you to actually play your instrument while using it. Easily 5 stars. It’s worth it to get the in-app purchases so you can include eighth notes in your practice.

I LOVE THIS APP!!!

Hands down one of the best ways to have fun and practice at the same time. The real difference with Monster Musician Reader is that it was created by amazing musicians/performers/educators for students of any level. My students love playing along with the original music in each track, and trying to master each level makes the game really fun. Definitely worth checking out for private lessons, classroom teaching, or if you want another way to practice on your own!
