FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: I bought Myst when it first came out in 1993. Can I get a free upgrade to this new version?
A: Thank you for your support over the years! We are not giving out free upgrades to previous purchasers of the original Myst. We put a lot of effort into making this new version of Myst and would appreciate your financial support again!

Q: Does this version of Myst support VR?
A: This version of Myst does not support VR, as the platform itself does not support it.

Q: I want to play Myst, but am concerned about my computer not meeting the minimum requirements. What should I do?
A: If your machine does not meet the minimum requirements and you still want to try Myst out, we recommend enabling one of our supersampling options through the graphics settings menu to see if it alleviates performance concerns. Depending on the storefront you purchase Myst from, you may be able to qualify for a refund through the store (not through Cyan support) if Myst does not run well on your platform. Please review each store platform refund policy for details.

Q: Will Myst support [insert language here] one day?
A: Possibly! We’d love to hear from you through our support team about any languages you’d like for us to support.

What’s New

Version 3.0.4

Hey all,

You’ve been asking, and we’ve been listening.

We’re happy to announce that this major content update and quality of life patch of Myst introduces the Age of Rime. This new Age offers additional content for players following the successful completion of the story of Myst. Once completing your game or loading a completed game, a new journey awaits you somewhere on Myst Island.

Some fans may know that Rime was previously a part of realMyst and realMyst: Masterpiece Edition. This reimagining of Rime will bring fresh discoveries to new and old players alike.

The Age of Rime introduces players to the snowy, mountainous seascape that Atrus and his family would visit in years past, before the events of Myst and Riven upended their lives. Sweeping vistas, beautiful ice structures, and fantastical natural phenomena await new visitors. This breathtaking new Age also houses a detailed laboratory space where bold experiments were made, delving into the mysterious nature of Linking Books themselves. This new version of Rime includes all-new narrative beats, new lore, and new sights to behold.

We hope to bring this patch to as many currently supported platforms for Myst as possible, so hang tight while we get that sorted.

Thanks, and enjoy.

Features
- Added the Age of Rime.
- Auto detect now supports auto-setting appropriate supersampling settings based on your scalability settings and platform type.
- An option for Color Context Subtitles has been added to the Interface settings menu. This will show text next to puzzles that require seeing particular colors to figure out a solution.
- Added the ability to zoom in on things with the Z key on mouse and keyboard, or left bumper on gamepad.
- Visual improvements made to the Myst Island library.

Majors
- Fixed cranks not reacting properly if you wind them past their endpoints.
- Fixed a rare crash that could occur going between two different engage points.
- Fixed DualSense controllers not working natively in the game.
- (Mac only) Implemented a workaround for auto detect not behaving well on Mac and sometimes setting too high of settings for what your Mac can handle. Auto detect will now use a specific set of rules based on the number of cores available on your Mac. This may also resolve issues on startup for folks on some Macs. Please make sure that your MacOS is on 15.3.2 or above to make sure this issue is resolved.

Minors
- Adjusted LODs on some meshes to prevent popping.
- Fixed deleting a screenshot from your notebook bouncing you back to the main menu instead of the Notebook submenu.
- (SPOILER) Fixed a missing material in D’ni.
- (SPOILER) The player is now stopped from being able to link back to Myst in the good ending until Atrus is done speaking with you.
- Fixed music not persisting upon save/load.

3.0.4 Fixes

Global

Majors
- Fixed an issue where some players who had previously played a randomized game of Myst prior to the Rime update were seeing a puzzle on Myst Island become unsolvable, preventing those players from reaching Rime.

Minors
- Minor mesh and lighting fixes implemented.
- Fixed a typo in Sirrus’s Journal in Rime.
- Fixed some interaction issues with the miniature lens toy in Rime.
- (SPOILER) Updated miniature lens toy model to have the same number of notches as the imager device.
- Adjusted the lab ruler model and textures in Rime so the "1" is in the right spot.
- Added an elevator region for the buttons in Rime.
- Fixed an issue with the aurora in Rime initializing to the wrong color under certain circumstances.
- Fixed some issues with the blank book in Rime causing incorrect behavior.

Myst never looked better

I’ve played through Myst several times over the years from the original release, through various updates/remasters, including RealMyst to this one. This one is a mostly superb update/rebuilding in Unreal Engine, with countless nice new touches, at least visually. The photo feature is welcome, but marred by being fussy to access, and *inaccessible* when you often need it most (whilst interacting with a puzzle interface)—I still had to resort to paper several times. The load/save interface is annoying because the only info it offers is slot number and timestamp, so it’s hard to tell which saved state is which. It should display a screenshot. Replacing the original video bits of the actors with CGI puppets was also a dubious choice, here. I was also disappointed that Rime was omitted, since that helped make Atrus more of a character and set things up nicely for Riven, and we now have a 3D engine worthy of Riven.

I’m Glad This Is On the Mac!

I have an iMac M1 with only 8 GB of RAM. I've never played Myst before and thoroughly enjoyed it. I got it in early April 2025 after the Rime Age had been added. Although the game auto-selected Medium, I was still impressed with the detail of the environments, running smoothly on my 4480x2520 display. A couple minor bugs were cleared up in an update after I started. I only sought help once due to confusion over how to activate the Rime Age (and regretted having one less puzzle to solve!) Just note that finding it is still within the context of the game. Thanks Cyan!

Rime Addition is Incredible

Soooo beyond excited at the new addition of the Rime age. I never got to play it myself as I only had the original Myst as a kid (but recently watched playthroughs of it online) and I have to say I think this is the best version of it Cyan has done. It’s really quite stunning and magical (and somewhat poignantly sad)
