FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: I bought Myst when it first came out in 1993. Can I get a free upgrade to this new version?
A: Thank you for your support over the years! We are not giving out free upgrades to previous purchasers of the original Myst. We put a lot of effort into making this new version of Myst and would appreciate your financial support again!

Q: Does this version of Myst support VR?
A: This version of Myst does not support VR, as the platform itself does not support it.

Q: I want to play Myst, but am concerned about my computer not meeting the minimum requirements. What should I do?
A: If your machine does not meet the minimum requirements and you still want to try Myst out, we recommend enabling one of our supersampling options through the graphics settings menu to see if it alleviates performance concerns. Depending on the storefront you purchase Myst from, you may be able to qualify for a refund through the store (not through Cyan support) if Myst does not run well on your platform. Please review each store platform refund policy for details.

Q: Will Myst support [insert language here] one day?
A: Possibly! We’d love to hear from you through our support team about any languages you’d like for us to support.

What’s New

Version 2.0.2

Myst now comes with better platform stability, AND support for hardware-accelerated ray traced reflections, now available on Macs with the powerful M3 family of chips.

We’ve upgraded Myst from using Unreal Engine 4.27+ to Unreal Engine 5.3.2. Doing this has resolved a WIDE number of stability issues related to the game running on various platforms.

Engine Upgrade Features

- Visual changes/stability: The newer engine has resolved a lot of flickering texture issues we saw come up on lower-end hardware especially. There should also be some slight improvements in lighting, reflections, and more.
- HDR support changes: HDR has better support on all platforms now.
- RHI support changes: Metal 3 RHI support has been added. It is only enabled when on the M3 family of chips at this time. SM5 is the default RHI for all other Macs.
- OS Requirements: We are increasing our MacOS minimum requirement from MacOS 11.5 to MacOS 14.5.

UI Refresh

We’re happy to introduce a cleaner, more usable, and much nicer looking version of the menu for everyone in Myst. For those who have played our remake of Riven, you may find some similarities between the two. Here are some of the improvements our new menu in Myst brings compared to the old one:

- New cursor options have been added, and the default cursor has been switched to be the hand cursor. The default cursor size has also been modified to accommodate this change. This will override what folks currently have set in their cursor settings as we believe it is the best default experience for folks moving forward.
- The graphics settings menu is now much clearer on which settings need to be “Applied” and which ones will Apply automatically.
- Updated naming for “Gameplay Context Subtitles” to “Sound Context Subtitles” for clarity
- There’s a “Help” sub-menu now, and you can find the game’s version number there, in addition to “Teleport to Safe Spot” when you are in-game, should you need it.
- The controller/keyboard diagrams are now much clearer and scale better for a variety of screen sizes instead of being baked images. It will also properly detect the kind of controller you are using. Note that a couple of bindings may have changed – in particular the screenshot binding is now “x” instead of spacebar.
- A Gamma settings menu has been added that all users will be prompted with when they start up the game for the first time (or if they have not previously configured the setting through this menu, which should be just about everyone right now!).
- The default font used in Myst for subtitles and other in-game UI has been changed to be more readable and aligned with the general style Myst already has.
- The credits formatting has been updated to be more readable, and new folks who contributed to this patch have been added to the credits as well.

Updated Supersampling Options

- MetalFX is now the default Supersampling option on Mac.
- FSR has been removed as a Supersampling option on Mac.

General Fixes

- Fixed crash or hang that could occur on startup of the game when you had AirPods as your current audio device
- (SPOILER) Fixed incorrect translation of a Polish clue to get to the Selenitic Age
- Saving and loading while music is playing in an area now has better persistence when loading back into those areas
- Fixed some textures flickering if you stand too close to them on certain quality settings
- Fixed haptics not working in some areas
- Fixed unexpected lighting changes occurring when moving between various areas
- Fixed some items appearing outside of their drawers when you load into the room the drawers are in
- Added water splashing sounds when walking over puddles in Stoneship
- Lighting on AMD Macs has been improved in various situations

HOTFIX

- Fix being unable to escape the Overwrite Save Game prompt
- Fix being unable to take more than 50 photos
- Fix small sound context subtitles

A fun trip down memory lane

I remember playing this game when it came out and this is definitely much nicer graphics and interaction. There are a few minor areas they could improve but overall it was beautiful. My recommendations are to make it easier to see if you're holding the final Myst book page and also make it easier to access photos without needing to enter the menu. Just create a key to press to pull up this info. Thanks for remaking this classic!

Myst never looked better

I’ve played through Myst several times over the years from the original release, through various updates/remasters, including RealMyst to this one. This one is a mostly superb update/rebuilding in Unreal Engine, with countless nice new touches, at least visually. The photo feature is welcome, but marred by being fussy to access, and *inaccessible* when you often need it most (whilst interacting with a puzzle interface)—I still had to resort to paper several times. The load/save interface is annoying because the only info it offers is slot number and timestamp, so it’s hard to tell which saved state is which. It should display a screenshot. Replacing the original video bits of the actors with CGI puppets was also a dubious choice, here. I was also disappointed that Rime was omitted, since that helped make Atrus more of a character and set things up nicely for Riven, and we now have a 3D engine worthy of Riven.

Great Memory - Wanted More!

Having played the original, back when it was a NEW game, it was mind blowing. Absolutly my favorite game and the yardstick against which all others were measured. Games like Zork Nemisis, and Zork Grand Inquisitor are others in the genre.

This latest version rean really well on the M1 Mac mini. Graphics were a little less than buttery smooth, but very enjoyable none the less.

However, with the game having been "completly redone" in the Unreal Engine, I really was expecting more. Not exactly sure what that "more" was going to be, but I would have reckognized it if I saw it.

More quality to the graphics maybe? Certainly more interaction with the items in the world? The puzzles, sound, music, still hold up well. However, the free roam, open world, capability available in today's games left me expecting this MYST overhaul to be far more expansive than it is.

Still very much worth playing if you have never experienced MYST before. However, for the die-hard that has played MYST, and the many iterations of upgrades that have come since, this one is unfortunatly, and sadly, not alltogether that special.
