NewsGuard's red/green ratings and labels help users know which news and information websites to trust.

NewsGuard uses journalism to fight unreliable news. Our trained analysts, who are experienced journalists, research online news brands to help readers and viewers know which ones are trustworthy--and which ones aren't.

Our Green-Red ratings signal if a website is trying to get it right or instead has a hidden agenda or knowingly publishes falsehoods or propaganda, giving readers more context about their news online.

It does a reasonable job, but could be a bit harsher.

This doesn't have a biased outlook, don't get me wrong.
However, I would posit that it doesnt have a harsh enough take on many sources. Such sources which are clearly pathos-laden and drive a partisan agenda on both sides of the aisle: The Daily Wire (Conservative commentary news), and the Washington Post (Known to lean left in its reporting).
Just a suggestion, but things as they are rated now are rated in a very safe way. Perhaps its the prudent thing to do.

Safety Always ,

Careful

NewsGuard is not a bad app, it's not a good app. It's an attempt to let us all know the validity of specific news sites. They can only be accurate about what they have full knowledge about. They will never really have FULL knowledge about the contents of any site. It's easy to make an assumption about the contents of the NYT, but even they have had to make a front page apology for a story based on non-factual information. I use this app but I am careful about fact checking. I also continue to read the WSJ, but they also have run stories based on non-factual liberal information that surprised me. We are in a time in this country (USA) when it's impossible to know what to expect. The top of law enforcement agencies are guilty of crimes, but it's taking years for the media to report it to us so we have to look far and wide to find it for ourselves. I believe NewsGuard is doing a great job in a difficult environment and time. Hopefully everything will go back to honesty being the pinnacle of character. NewsGuard, I'm sure will then easily earn five stars. I know they mean to be very good, but they are given a difficult bunch of "journalists" to check and rate the work of. Sadly, these "journalists" only want fame not to inform us anymore. I'm planning on re-reviewing NewsGuard after November 2020 :)

If you expect it to rate a certain way, you might be disappointed

TL;DR: If you expect this to rate your favorite site with a shiny green check and are mad when it doesn't... it's more likely that you misunderstood the purpose of the app. It literally only checks a fixed set of metrics. It doesn't take political bias into account. The site can be full on liberal (WAPO) or conservative (Fox) and still get a green check bc of the practices and transparency they use overall as a source.

What I most respect about this app is the goal of helping users maintain awareness in regards to the transparency and reporting standards of a news outlet. It has a clear guide on what it checks allowing anyone with doubts to go behind and double check. The best part, imo, is that it's agnostic in terms of political parties. You can expect that it will not rate one source better or worse due to bias.

That said, I encourage you to take this review as well as others with a grain of salt. I noticed most of the reviewers have a common complaint: the app is not rating my preferred news source as well as I expect and it's not rating my most hated news source as terribly as I want.

Seems the app, though made by humans is capable of something many of us still struggle with; in and of itself that makes this app worthy of some praise.
