A free-to-play game created by six university graduates over five months.

The Legend of Nishan Shaman is a traditional tale passed down by Northeastern Chinese minority tribes for thousands of years. The tale is about how a female shaman named Nishan saved the soul of a young boy from evil.

Players will control Nishan and go on a magical adventure through different realms, defeating evil by beating on her shaman drum.

It is a casual story-driven rhythm game, as well as a serious game that aims to pass on the culture of Chinese minority tribes.

In the style of traditional Chinese paper-cutting art, with a mysterious and original shamanistic soundtrack and a compendium that contains abundant cultural information, Nishan Shaman will show you the charm of Northeastern Chinese minority culture.

Everything a cultural story retold should be

There’s not really anything bad that can be said about the game. I appreciate that they found someone to tell the story in the native language of its origin with subtitles; it seems to be from Manchuria. The classic paper-style puppets with minimal special effects are stunning. The story itself is from folklore and is very interesting, and you can unlock details of the Manchurian folktales depending how well you accomplished beating a level. Basically the only way to not get anything is if you fail the level. I’m not going to lie, even though it only has 5 songs, it took me at least 15 tries before I even passed the last song, and I felt no frustration from it. And, you can also adjust the delay for the monsters if you need them to come slower. The songs are also beautiful; three of them almost brought a tear from my eyes and the other two got me in the rhythm. I highly recommend this game to anyone who like any aspect of this game.

Absolutely amazing

This game was magical. Stunning and beautiful. I’m blown away at what I just experienced and saddened that I quickly blew through the 5 levels. Only downfall is that it’s 5 levels. However, one can’t complain because it was free. I applaud the developers for creating something so powerful and amazing only to give it away. No ads. Just pure magic. Now, to the developers, I will gladly pay for an extended game if you can maintain the level of expertise you put into these 5 levels. I am looking forward to keeping an eye out for possible additions.

For those who don’t know, it’s like “guitar hero” in principle, but takes on a Cirque du Soleil rhythmic play with creative visuals that imports you to a new world. It’s also valuable in helping people practice listening to and playing unique rhythms.

Something Very Special

I’m usually not a huge fan of music games, nor a Sinophile, I don’t usually write reviews and when I do, they’re NEVER anywhere near this long, but this game is truly something special. I was absolutely mesmerized and enchanted from the opening sequence to the end of the heart-breakingly few levels. I enjoy mythology themed games, and this definitely falls into that category. The story is beautiful, the music is powerful, the scenery transporting. The art creates the epitome of a mythological, magical realm. The spirits are beautifully stylized and ephemeral, with just a hint of creepiness. The way that the patterns from your drum interact with the music let’s you be involved in its creation and creates a connection between the art, the artist, and the player. Excellent replay value trying to fill the Compendium as well.
