I purchased the Nix 2 as a gift for my wife. She was the color coordinator in our household. I thought this might be a useful and fun tool. She never used it.... Today I needed to determine a match color for a ceiling repair at one of our homes. I decided to try and use the Nix to determine a match. I cannot authoritatively determine if the scanner is accurate but I can say the Nix Utility software is useless and unintuitive. Despite knowing the paint brand we use (Sherwin Williams), I was provided at least a dozen choices based on my scan. Useless! On balance, this was a wasted $100 "stocking stuffer." I may try this one more time on an exterior project. If I glean any useful information from the second effort, I will update my rating and review. At this point, Buyer Beware.....
This is nice app with a poor user interface. Once you figure out how it does things, it’s good, but the learning curve is steep because it does not follow iOS UI conventions at all. It’s like a PC app from the 1980’s. Nix, give the UI a complete overhaul, and this time, make it easier to figure out how to scan for color values, how to match to a paint brand, and how to save and export both types of data. Then you’d have a real winner. Right now, I’d hesitate to recommend the Nix Mini to my friends.
Thank you for the thoughtful feedback. Usability and clear workflows are important to us, and comments like yours help inform future improvements. If you have additional suggestions you’d like to share, we’re always open to hearing them.
Just like other reviewers, this is basically a worthless app. I never experienced the old one, but I’ve been using this more or less successfully for a few weeks now and was almost getting comfortable with its many failings including needing to re-pair my scanner with my phone virtually every time I used it and the relatively large number of button-presses required to get it to scan again, and its cumbersome and unintelligible system for remembering colors. Now today the dang app won’t even boot up, just constantly “downloading paints database .” And this is with the latest update. Terrible.
This worked perfectly for me, and did just what I expected. I charged the device, downloaded the app, did not create an account. I was able to scan a spot on a newly-acquired painting and get the perfect paint color recommendations from the favorite brands I chose. A worthwhile investment to ensure I paint this huge accent wall the exact color I want.
I suspect the one star review was from a much earlier version of the app. NIX seems to have worked out the glitches they talked about. You can literally scan color after color with a single click in the app. I analyzed 16 paint swatches in less than 5 minutes. Easy. This was well worth the $. The only reason I gave it a 4 star instead of a 5 star is because I’m not sure how accurate the hex codes are. If you move the sensor around on the swatch, depending on how good the light is, you can get different hex codes for the same color. So you just need to use your best judgment to make sure you have a close match. I’d call it 90% accurate though. Darker colors are harder I think.
Bought this as a gift for someone else, tested it out beforehand after seeing so many negative reviews for the app. Haven’t run into any major issues like other reviewers have. Device works as advertised but app UI could be better. If you run into issues, reinstalling could help.
