Notenik is a simple yet powerful and flexible system for taking, collecting, organizing and publishing Notes. Each Note is stored in its own plain text file. A folder full of Notes becomes a Collection. Create as many Collections as you like, and store them wherever you like. Store them in iCloud Drive, or in your Dropbox folder, and let them sync to your other devices. Each Note consists of one or more fields: minimally, a Title and a Body, but you can add more, based on your needs for a particular Collection. Use Markdown to format the Body of your Notes (including footnotes, citations, definition lists and Math equations!). Add Tags to your Notes to see them organized by topic or some other system. Each Note can have multiple tags, and each tag can have multiple levels. Tags are stored within the text files, so they will sync along with your Notes to other devices. Add a Link field to your Notes and use them as Bookmarks, or simply to reference additional information for a Note. You can also add Date and Status and Recurs fields to your Notes, and then use them as a To Do system. Add Seq + Level fields to use your Collection as an outline. Import and export and share your Notes using a variety of different formats. Notenik is open-source software and free.

At first glance, Notenik has loads of potential to become one of Mac OS's premier notetaking applications. For one, it's a native app, which gives it a sophisticated advantage over most software that is by-and-large running on Electron (bleh). Under hood is a lot more than what you'd expect upon downloading it. Notenik's use of templating and scripting allow users to turn their notes into static sites, and I could imagine many other things provided they take the time to read the documentation, reach out to Herb Bowie (the developer) and use their imagination. Notenik reminds me of certain Legacy apps like MacJournal and Circus Ponies Notebook/Notetaker. They provide a welcoming UI with a robust UX that allows users to leverage the extensiveness of the software to empower themselves creatively.

For text notes, I have been using a combination of Microsoft OneNote, Notability, Cloud Outliner Pro, Mac Notes, and Text Edit. None of these apps was quite what I am looking for. Stumbled on Notenik and decided to give it a try. This is a fantastic app if you just want to store text based notes.Positives • Very clean interface. • I very much like that notes are simply listed in a single column versus note taking apps like OS X Notes and others where notes are nested in folders. • Note titles can be listed without other distracting information like creation or modification dates or the first few words of the note • In the list of notes, every other line is shaded which looks nice • Notes are not saved in a proprietary file format. • A collection of notes is saved simply as group of text files in a folder. • I like having separate collections of notes rather than having all my notes open at once.• Very quick to use. Really like being able to toggle back and forth between the note list and the tag list.• The author is very responsive.Neutral • Using Display/Edit reminds me of using WordPerfect in the 1990s. :-)• If you want to make a new paragraph either use a double return, or a double space at end of line plus a return, or an html line break at the end of a line. Using a double space is slowly becoming more routine for me. • There is no print command in Notenik. Instead, you open a note in Text Edit by pressing command T and then use TextEdit to print or export as a pdf. Negative • If you are in display and reading a note and find something you want to edit, when you toggle to edit, you are always brought back to the top of the note. So, in a long note, you have to scroll down and find where you want to edit again.I really, really like Notenik. This is by far my fav app for text notes and I am still exploring what it can do. I am moving all my notes from Notability, Cloud Outliner Pro, Mac Notes, and Text Edit to Notenik. I hope the author will continue to improve the app.

It's a really robust, no-nonsense text file editor and organizer. Easy to create markdown or text files, link them to each other, and produce a hierarchy according to your own organization. Files can work locally. The documentation and instructions are thorough and informative. If you have a lot of thoughts or documentation you'd like to write down, this is a good file cabinet. Be mindful it's not a word processor. Notenik sticks to what it does really really well.

Great native app. A great, clean look that is highly useful. The options for your lists and collections are just right - you get enough options for customization without being too overwhelmed with tons of features. Makes for a great content calendar if you have to publish often. Best of all, no emails from developers and all my notes are totally safe in icloud or directly on my device.

Fixed an image-related bug in the Web Book Export as Site function; Eliminated unnecessary image icons in menu items; Added option for resolving relative wiki links when using the Share with Options function; Refinement of styling handling in note titles; Refinement of file naming to accommodate some meaningful punctuation characters.
