Description

The residents of NumberShire are up to their ears in problems…math problems, that is! To solve them, they need a new apprentice to come to town and master math skills aligned to state and national standards. Designed for kindergarten through second grade students, NumberShire is an enchanted land filled with lovable characters, hilarious adventures, fun mini-games and cool rewards. This version is for classroom users who already have web accounts and requires a username, password, and login code.

With a curriculum designed by educational experts from the University of Oregon, NumberShire is supported by rigorous research that has shown it can significantly improve children’s mathematics learning. Built using academic best practices and a unique story-driven approach, NumberShire emphasizes deep learning with over 12 hours of carefully designed educational content.

In an 8-week pilot study in 26 first grade classrooms, NumberShire significantly improved students’ mathematics learning. Using rigorous research methods supported by the U.S. Department of Education’s What Works Clearinghouse, the pilot study found that students who played NumberShire performed better than control students on assessments of critical skills addressed in the Common Core State Standards.

I got a new pet!!!

My students are enjoying NumberShire! They are all very focused and attentive during the NumberShire intervention activities, however outbursts of ‘I got a cat!!!’ or ‘I got a puppy!!!’ occasionally break the silence in the computer lab.

Kids love this game for learning math!

I assisted in focus testing the computer version at my local elementary school. All the kids adored their time with game and the kids showed significant improvement with their whole number math skills by the end of the game. The iPad version was a welcome improvement because of the ease of use for young kids. Although the computer version was wonderful, I must say that, after seeing my nephew use this on the iPad, that the game is very approachable by less computer literate kids. Selecting answers and interacting with the game is very simple when you take out the "mouse factor". Overall, I think this program is a wonderful way for young homeschool students to learn math or for students attending school to improve on their whole number math skills. Great game 5/5.

Check your work like an expert.

The main character, Mr. Elder, of the story says this throughout the math activities. Both my children now repeat this phrase and put it to practice when doing their homework.

What I felt was best about my children's NumberShire experience was the excitement they had learning and solving math problems. The activities were teaching based and not simply skill and drill. The activities were all tied to the story and my children got a real sense of accomplishment completing them and helping out the characters in the world.

My personal favorite result I witnessed from using the NumberShire app was, my then four year old, using the in-game hundreds chart and taking it upon herself to accurately count from one to one hundred repeatedly.
