Want my money back!

Am taking a course in a different language and wanted to translate my pdf files so I can study for tomorrow’s test.
(It was taking me to long to try and translate all the terminology on my own.) Found this app and thought it was my answer
to passing my exam!! Sadly, when I tried to translate the text, it could not do it. Then I realized that the text on the document and
the text in the window was not the same. I took the text into google translate and saw a bunch of vulgar and offensive language. I looked at the
text in the other language and realized google was right! I want my money back!

Regret my purchase

I returned to school recently. I had some text that I wanted to convert into an electronic format for easier keeping and reading. I surfed the web briefly for OCR solutions. Most appeared to be $100+. I have no problem paying for good software, but I figured that I wouldn't use it enough to justify the cost. I figured I'd hit the App Store and see what the offerings were like. This app was well reviewed and at $5 seemed to be worth the risk.

I tried 10 times to have the app work on two different images I scanned. Most attempts were met with beach balls. The two times it didn't make me resort to a Force Quit produced an empty text file. I can't explain it given how well other people seem to like the app. I checked the support out and was taken to the programmer's site. It's obviously some guy working on it in his spare time. I would have tried to work with them to support the product, but a little more searching on the 'Net found a free program that used an open-source OCR engine. Those same files that OCRTOOLS couldn't handle were read into text by this other program in a minute or so, without making my computer unusable in the process. Considering I found this program that's free and meets my needs I'll simply delete OCRTOOLS from my drive and call myself lucky I wasted only $5. To bad no trials on the Mac App Store...

Perhaps you'll have better luck than I did.

Pretty good app with very little editing required

Pleasantly surprised to find out how well this app works. I've used expensive versions of OCR software that required just as much or more editing in the final text, so the $4.99 I spent here is well worth it. I typically scan in articles but for recipes I often take a photo when I can't rip out a page from someone else's magazine or book. A bit of testing showed me that it works best to take two or three close-up photos for best results using natural light, no flash. For some reason, the in-app lasso/crop feature doesn't seem to work and I found it scanning in text from a column of text I didn't select… a simple crop of the original photo to show only the text I wish to convert worked great. In a recipe with about 250 words I found I had to only make 5 spelling corrections, usually involving either hyphens or parenthesis - or ( or ). Nice app! Please fix the lasso/selection/crop feature and I'll bump it up to 5 stars.
