Description

Welcome to PD Buddy, an app inspired by science and created for people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers.

PD Buddy was born out of a personal journey. My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease five years ago, and we have spent countless hours researching and speaking with experts to better understand the condition. It turns out that the picture is not as bleak as his doctor first described. There is substantial evidence coming from scientific research demonstrating that it is possible to stay in control of the symptoms and significantly slow down the progression of the disease.

I have been working in the technology sector for over 20 years, so the challenge to build PD Buddy was right up my alley!

There are people with Parkinson’s who have managed to succeed and stay physically and mentally fit after 20+ years with the disease. They have accomplished this through the right mix of exercise regimen, diet, meditation, and medication. Additionally, the right mindset, mental health, and a healthy social life play a significant role.

PD Buddy is an easy-to-use app for anyone serious about more than just taking a pill; it also encourages exercise and exploration of other self-care therapies.

What can you do on PD Buddy:

- Join the PD Buddy Routine recommended by dozens of neuroscientists working for decades with people with Parkinson’s. These routines include physical, brain, voice, and hands exercises, appropriate diet, and meditation. You can personalise this routine at any time.
- Have fun and join the Leaderboard by completing PD Buddy Routines, collecting points, and comparing your progress with your peers. Check your Progress and Exchange to see what other PD Buddies do for their routines.
- Try to check every day our Keep Learning section for news on pharmaceutical developments and medical trials, supplements, scientific research, nutrition, technology, alternative therapies, and much more.
- Set up Pills Reminders notifications on your phone and keep records of all your meds and supplements.
- Ask the AI (Artificial Intelligence) assistant, which I connected to Track Symptoms, how to manage your symptoms better.
- Invite your Caregivers to check on you by following your Routines progress, tracking your symptoms, and helping manage Pills Reminders. They also have access to their own Journal, Stay Social features, and Explore PD.
- Make friends with other PD Buddies and find an event to attend together. You can use PD Buddy chat to stay in touch with others by using Stay Social, join group chats and video meetups.
- Discover Hack PD allowing PD Buddies to explore what works for others to manage their symptoms by rating and adding solutions to common problems.

I built the app on my own over the past few months and will continue working on further improvements. Game changer for Parkinson’s Patients!

I’ve tried all the available apps for folks w Parkinson’s, but none are like PD Buddy! It envelopes you with welcoming prompts and whimsical illustrations, and instantly creates that “buddy” vibe. This contrasts sharply with the far more sterilized, formal, and science-y Parkinson’s apps which simply demand too much time and focus to participate (at least for me!!

While the more “clinical” type interfaces of the other apps may have a utilitarian role in your care team’s management of your granular symptom documentation, they prove challenging to maintain by the Patient him/herself. Just too much to click through and diligently document on a daily basis reliably.

Most notably, in the other apps targeting PD patients, the “relationship” is between you and the app in a silo. Whereas, the PD Buddy app democratizes the experience by creating connections and friendships with and between users/ patients … you immediately feel “less alone” in a real world that was previous so isolating.

The interactive “social” experience of PD Buddy builds a sense of community through the “Groups” tab where members create virtual “online clubs” (by theme or topic) as another way to connect with others. The whole PD Buddy app experience is inviting, stimulating, and engaging.

With all those differentiators, the ability to capture “daily patient symptoms” is still visually elegant, paired down, but still robust enough, without being so arduous that you quit.

The most useful function in the PD Buddy app is the “daily routines” section where the patient tracks all activities of self-care and exercise. There’s a fun point system allocated to successes throughout each day and gives you a dopamine kick for that alone!

While still in beta test mode, the “early adopters” can give feedback directly to the developer on glitches (as there are some to resolve) or suggestions for “future feature” roll outs to come.

Collaborative. That’s the one word I’d use to describe this wonderful little app that packs a punch in useful data capture but sprinkles in lot of fun and whimsy to an otherwise dreary Parkinson’s Disease experience!
