Quickly find hazard-ranked pesticide products to manage pests in commercial buildings, on landscape and turf, or in the home and garden. The Pesticide Research Institute (PRI) Pest Smart™ mobile app is a new user-friendly tool for LEED professionals, Integrated Pest Management (IPM) professionals, and anyone with an interest in finding information about pesticide products, including identifying the least-toxic products.

The PRI Pest Smart™ app ranks each pesticide product utilizing a three-level Hazard Tier based on potential for health and environmental impacts.

-Hazard Tier 1 = High Hazard
-Hazard Tier 2 = Moderate Hazard
-Hazard Tier 3 = Low Hazard

The PRI Pest Smart™ app has information for over 18,000 pesticide products. Find the Hazard Tier ranking you need to make informed decisions about pesticide use.

-Conveniently look-up pesticide product information on your mobile phone while on the job, in the store, or at home.
-Quickly verify the eligibility of a pesticide product for use in the LEED v4-certified Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program.
-Search by product name or registration number.
-Search by pest to find pesticide products that target common household and garden pests like ants, fleas, cockroaches, lawn weeds and aphids.
-Compare products and find least-toxic alternatives to streamline decision-making.
-Link to PRI’s Pest Management Bulletins to learn about low-impact methods of pest control that minimize pesticide use and exposure.

The PRI pesticide product database includes currently registered products and those canceled within the last 5 years. We also include a selection of "exempt" products containing minimum-risk (Section 25(b)) ingredients that do not require a Federal registration, but are potentially useful as low toxicity alternatives in an IPM program. The product data are updated every 2-4 weeks.

PRI utilizes pesticide information from the product label and MSDS, as well as leading international, federal, and state agencies to assign a Hazard Tier ranking, including:  International Agency for Research on Cancer, US Environmental Protection Agency, National Institutes of Health, the European Union, California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, and California Department of Pesticide Regulation.

The PRI Pest Smart™ app is a companion to PRI’s Pesticide Product Evaluator®. The app contains a subset of the information in the Evaluator, which provides comprehensive, integrated, and up-to-date information on human and environmental health hazards, water pollution potential, and environmental fate and transport characteristics for pesticide chemicals.

The Pest Smart™ app only provides information on pesticide products available in the United States.

What a great resource!

This app helped me find a low toxicity snail bait to treat a major snail and slug infestation in my garden. My dog roams the yard, and birds are frequent visitors, so it was important that I find least toxic products.

The app is easy to use. You can search by pest and get a list of pesticide products sorted by hazard ranking. Low toxicity, hazard tier three products, are always at the top of the list. Check out the pest management bulletins, too. I found a great guide on snail and slug control that I’m using to get rid of these pests.

Happy gardening!

Handy app for protecting bees

With all the talk these days about how pesticides are making problems for bees, it’s great to find an app that will help you figure out what pesticides should NOT be used in your garden. Also, good links to non-pesticide ways to deal with bugs and weeds. If you are a gardener, you need this app!
