Description

Renaming multiple photo and video files (JPG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, RAW, ...) like a pro based on their EXIF attributes, like date/time or location. Made as simple as that.

Photo Naminator is a 3rd-party utility for Apple macOS that takes photo and video files as input (like JPEG, PNG, GIF or RAW format files) and renames their filenames based on metadata associated with those photos, like the date and time, or location or with what type of lense a photo was taken. Create sub-folders on-the-fly while renaming photo files to sort photo files into directories based on any of those metadata properties, e.g. one folder for each year and month, or city and country. Filter identical photo files (duplicates) during the process to ensure there's only one copy of each photo file afterwards. Photo Naminator also handles so-called sidecar files (e.g. XMP) correctly during the renaming process by keeping their names in sync with the respective photo file.

The metadata considered for each file is the corresponding EXIF, TIFF, PNG or camera manufacturer related data that a digital camera or smartphone stores with each photo taken. This includes information about when or where the photo was taken, what camera settings where used, etc.

Photo Naminator allows you to use any of those metadata attributes to dynamically construct a new file name for each input photo file.

Using the MapQuest Geolocation API, Photo Naminator can automatically determine address information like street, city, state and country of nearby landmarks based on your photo's GPS location information. A valid MapQuest API key is required, but can be easily obtained by registering with MapQuest for a free-of-charge API key (good for 15.000 lookups).

A typical use-cases for Photo Naminator is naming all files of a directory based on the date and time they were taken, so you can easily sort them chronologically. But there are many additional data points captured with a photo and stored in its associated EXIF or other metadata, like camera or lense used, the location where the photo was taken, dimensions in pixels, etc...

So-called sidecar files like XMP metadata files which are associated with photo files by sharing the same base-filename, but a different file extension (e.g. XMP) will be automatically detected when analysing the input photo files. When the photo file then gets renamed, the associated sidecar files will be renamed and moved/copied accordingly, ensuring that both files stay in sync.

By the way, Photo Naminator can also change the creation and modification times of the actual file itself to match the data and time the photo was taken.

If you want to get rid of sensitive metadata, like timestamps or GPS location of a photo, use the author's Photo Anonymizator app (also available on the Apple App Store) for bulk-removal of sensitive EXIF metadata without re-encoding the actual images.

This is what I expected in a photo renamer

Update: I just swang by to update my star rating to five stars. Customer service is excellent. Every update seems to have some kind of tweak that just makes the job that much easier.

So far, this app is proving to be the best photo renaming app I've used so far. It's easy to use though there is a slight learning curve, it's really quick to pickup. It's especially helpful that it provides completion dropdowns based on what you've typed for new pattern elements. Because of that feature, you don't need to know the exact name of what you are looking for off the top of your head. You can just start typing some characters and then search through the options that come up. This is a really slick setup. I especially like how it gives the option to rename the original files or to rename a copy. Awesome stuff so far.

Thanks so much for the extensive and great review – awesome! :) I'm glad that Photo Naminator proved helpful to you and you like how it approaches the renaming of your files in a highly flexible but still easy to use manner!

Kind regards, Björn

P.S.: And thanks so much for taking the effort to come back and revise your already awesome review once more! :)

Great App - Replaced my PIE app from Windows

This is a great app. There are some little bugs. The 'uniquifer' function "FileNameDupNo" doesn't always work. Once in a while, I run across an old file that doesn't have the milliseconds , so they resolve to '000', I would think that the "FileNameDupNo" would then add a '2', '3', etc. for all pictures taken within the same 'second'. But it doesn't always work. The other thing is if there is no "DateTimeOriginal", it's supposed to default to "DateTimeFileCreated" as a replacement. But this also doesn't always work. Sometiimes "DateTimeOriginal" resolves to a "??", but if I use "DateTimeFileCreated" explicitly, it does create a name 'correctly' (just not by default as the documentation says : "DateTimeOriginal: The timestamp information of the original photo (e.g. point in time it was taken with the camera) derived from the respective metadata property of the photo file (e.g. exif or TIFF); if no such info exists, the file creation timestamp is used."). Otherwise, it has been working flawlessly for me a couple of days.

Hi Andy,

thanks a lot for the kind review and feedback! I am sorry to hear that there are apparently sporadic issues as you describe – I will dig into it and see whether I can identify what's going wrong, provide a fix if possible.

It would be fantastic if you could reach out to me via Help/Support/Email (find in Photo Naminator's Help menu) so that we could exchange in more detail about your experience and where things are going south with the app. Thanks a lot in advance.

Best regards, Björn

Perfect tool if you deal with a lot of photos!

I take a LOT of pictures for work. I found this app because I export the photos from my iPhone save space using Apple's Photos app. I was disappointed that the Photos app gives few options and even less control when exporting many photos to keep them organized. I had to find a solution and Photo Naminator is it!!!

This app gives you so many options to suit your needs and customize folder structure, naming, etc. The possibilities are endless as long as your photos have EXIF data. I was just able to properly organize over 24,000 pictures in a matter of minutes!

Huge Kudos to the developer! I will definitely contribute to the Coffee Jar!

Wow! Thanks for the fantastic review and kind words! And for the coffee donation, of course ;-) Very much appreciate you sharing your review here on the App Store! Best, Björn
