You are the Nameless One, a hulking figure covered in scars and tattoos collected over the course of countless lives—none of which you can remember, but are now coming back to haunt you. Loved this classic game
This retro RPG is more story than combat, but that story really stays with you. The characters are extemely memorable and their flaws and motivations make their interactions very touching.
I think of this game almost as an interative novel that makes you engage your own feelings of loss, regret and meaning. The ending is abrupt, but really hits hard when you think about it.
Can’t wait to see the native MacOS version!
This game was never released for the Mac OS9 or OS X back in the day, but even with the endless crashes due to playing it on a clunky Windows emulation for Mac, it was by far my favorite Overhaul game… and that’s saying something because I loved the BG series (space hamster indeed). For RPG players who like the quirky writinig of the BG games, or younger gamers who’ve never heard of this game: the dialogue is a lot like the original Dragon Age, the NPC lines and voice acting is like Borderlands 2 (crazy weird one liners); the scenarios are very Fallout-like, and etc.
It was a game that Mac and Console users missed, dispite being Game of the Year. Frankly, if Overhaul did With Torment what the producers of Evil Dead 1 did with Evil Dead 2, and basically just remade the same game today, taking advantage of fifteen years worth of upgrades… it would be better than 95% of the games released in the last year because the characters, PlaneScape canon, writing, and scenerios are so good.
The game itself is full of creative solutions to classic RPG leveling and interface blah. Having trouble figuring out how to solve this or that puzzle? Die. lol. Don’t know where exactly to go next? Die. and etc. Since 1999 when this game was made, a lot of things that were fresh and new in this game have been poached by other game designers, but remember, this is the OG of quirky RPG game bangers. So… if the reader had anything to do with making or developing games, play this.
For the average gamer today, who knows more about their Moble phone apps and console gaming where everything is so simple, a eight or ten year old can beat the game in a couple days, YOU WILL HATE THIS GAME. Younger gamers won’t understand the context of the humor, or the satire that oozes from this games pores. It’s nuanced, not explicit. Except when it’s explicit to play up a gag (like Borderlands 2).
For older, more mature and thoughtful gamers, this game represents a fairly obscure corner of the TSR (D&D) universe where the rule is there aren’t many rules. Torment is like a classic rock song by the Beatles or Rolling Stones, you’ll find that you somehow know the lyrics, and have a hard time getting it out of your head… but you just can’t place the exact title of the song itself. If Umberto Eco were still alive and played computer/video games, he might say it’s like the Name of the Rose….

After putting hundreds of hours into BG:EE, I’m stoked to see this released. It has caused a problem though, do I move onto BG2:EE or this? Decisions, decisions. Solid buy either way, get it!
