Teach young learners (ages 3-8) vowel sounds with this simple and clever matching system! Learning phonics is fun with your iPad!

Developed for your iPad, this easy game will teach and reinforce letter sounds and phonics skills. Game play is based on the popular pocket charts used in classrooms around the world. Long and Short Vowel Sounds requires 3-5 minutes for a young learner to complete, making this iPad app ideal for students with short attention spans or those requiring highly visual or tactile learning experiences. Additionally, the activities have been uniquely designed to lock and play only in the portrait mode to simplify game play and eliminate an orientation switch if young learners jostle the iPad while playing.

Pocket Charts

As a reading teacher, I want to have control of the vowel sounds. This app puts long vowel sounds first for several pages and then short vowel sounds. There is no way to advance the pages or to preview what is coming. I like the idea of the app, but I do not like the lack of manipulation choices. Unless I am monitoring them, some of my students will randomly choose a letter just to get to the next page. Also, for $1.99 I would like to have more than 10-12 screens.

Developer Response ,

There is an option to shuffle the game play, so long and short vowel sounds can be mixed up. Students must have the correct answers in place for the game play to advance to the next screen. The price of the app is NOT $1.99 and never was. Most of the time it's free and sometimes I charge $.99.

Great app. Bright and and eye-catching graphics. Highly recommended.

This app does not name the pictures or give the sounds of the vowel choices. Without the guidance of an adult, this becomes a guessing game for beginning learners. They can just move the choices around until they get it correct.

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your feedback. All of these issues have been resolved with updates. This app now has excellent voice prompts. And yes, the game play is "multiple choice," like any classroom pocket chart. Apps are not babysitters. The guidance from an adult will always enhance learning for early childhood students. This app teaches long and short vowel sounds.
