One of the things that met Apple successful as a company was that they figured out what the public wanted before the public even knew. PolyNome is an app that does just that. It does everything you could ever hope for and then six months or a year later as you have improved you’ll think of a feature that you need and you’ll discover that it’s already there. And that happens again and again and again and again and again. Brilliant work by an exceptional coder and exceptional professional drummer.
Wow, thank you for such a great review. It warms my heart to know that people get so much out of the app. I spend most of my time (probably too much) thinking about how I can make the app better and easier to use. It’s always a work in progress. Thanks,Joe
I can appreciate the advanced controls but the UI feels a bit convoluted in my opinion. Additionally wasn’t a fan of the fact that the playlist and tempo changing feature was only accessible in the $32 premium package, *after* i already paid $10 for the basic app. That’s what I thought made this app special but constantly being asked to get premium doesn’t feel worth it I’m going to stick with ProMetronome and program my own tempo changing exercises in Ableton.
Thanks for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful review. I really do appreciate it, even when the feedback is critical.I completely understand where you’re coming from on both the UI and the Premium boundary. PolyNome is a very deep app, and that depth can sometimes come at the cost of simplicity. Improving clarity and reducing friction in the interface is something I continue to work on.I also hear your frustration about discovering that playlist sequencing and tempo changes live in Premium after purchasing the base app. The reason those features sit there is that Premium includes some extremely advanced setlist and practice tools that go far beyond basic tempo automation. Things like chaining presets into long-form setlists, conditional playback, and features that are designed specifically for real practice routines and live use.On top of that, Premium unlocks Track Markup, which is something you genuinely won’t find elsewhere. It lets you attach YouTube videos or audio tracks, add section and bar markers, loop and slow down specific sections, and even create clean lead sheets directly tied to playback. For many users, that becomes the core of how they practice and organize material. That said, your feedback about how this is communicated is totally fair. If it didn’t feel worth it to you, that’s on me to explain the value better and keep improving the experience. Thanks again for giving PolyNome a try and for sharing your perspective. I genuinely wish you the best with your practice setup, whatever tools you end up using.- Joe
I am guitarist who encounters/plays some complex “fingerstyle” rhythms (bass and treble clefs that employ different rhythm patterns in the same measures). By permitting me to enter the values of notes in the bass and treble clefs in separate beat lines (essentially like using parallel metronomes) Polynome has transformed the way I analyze and practice a new piece of music. It is simply amazing and I can’t believe I’m only discovering it now!!! I’ve read a couple of the reviews that say it’s over complicated—I am 70 years old, have owne the app for one hour, and I have already transcribed approximately 20 pretty complex measures into a new preset. The complexity derived from the seemingly endless variety of options. It is mind-blowingly amazing. I’m looking a. $150 Boss Dr. Beat metronome I have connected to my mixer and thinking, “Reverb!!” I can, without any reservation say that this is the best app I EVER purchased and/or subscribed to. I enthusiastically encourage anyone who wants to improve his/her rhythm (and who doesn’t?) to take give this app a try. Yes, it does take a few minutes to get under your fingers, but then it’s pretty darn intuitive. I simply can’t rave enough about it. So I will stop. Best of luck in your pursuit of the right beats for you!!
This app will change your life. On any instrument, it is the perfect companion and there’s no metronome that even comes close. It has any choice of sounds, subdivision overlay faders, two separate rhythm entries plus with two Lines each that can reflect the selected sticking from multiple sounds in each limb, polyrhtmic and counting full screen visuals, online public community library of presets and playlists, playlists that cycle presets and sub presets, setlists, the list goes on, on. The bottom line is if you’re in anyway interested in the world of rhythm, this app is worth every cent. We have a lot to be grateful for from drummer Joe Crabtree, it’s sole developer. Have a new idea or an issue with the app? He’ll hear you out and address it. This app is almost perfect as is, albeit with a relative learning curve that pays dividends (aided by joe’s vast video tutorials linked within the app and beyond). This app will only continue to grow in scope and sweetened layout ergonomics. With this tool, our learning is only limited by our imagination and discipline. Thanks Joe.
Thank you for the kind words and glowing review. PolyNome really is my baby, and I’m constantly working to add new features and fine tune the existing ones. I’m so pleased that you’re making good use of it. Best,Joe
This is unquestionably the best Metronome App out there! For drummers this is a must-get as well as for musicians of other instruments in general. This App has every feature that the other simple metronome apps on iTunes have as well as tons of other features (while still keeping the App very easy to use) including: tracking your practice times, making complicated polyrhythms, making set-lists for live gigs, having two metronomes to play different rhythms/times/beats simultaneously and is even able to program complicated drum beats (with a wide selection of drum voices, click sounds and voice counting). One of my most favorite features is (and is very useful for musicians of ALL disciplines/instruments) is the option to randomly mute the metronome for a bar, testing your internal timing!Highly recommend to get this app! A big plus is also that the maker of this App is an experienced drummer who is constantly working hard to update this App frequently to add many new features and improved look/layout. Thanks Joe!
Haven’t been a fan since it was rewritten, and everyone had to pay for the Pro version a second time. I feel like maybe the devs are trying to do too much with it. The interface seems cumbersome. It definitely is not something to use when you just need a simple click, as you have to program in a rhythm before the metronome will even work. Who’s ever heard of a metronome that you can’t just hit Play and go? Also, the app has an inbox? That’s annoying. Is there a way to avoid receiving messages unless they’re of vital importance?I originally got PolyNome because I wasn’t entirely happy with Tempo Advance’s weird interface. I was perfectly happy with the original version, and I wish the devs would have kept it available with occasional compatibility updates as necessary. The new version makes me consider going back to Tempo Advance. At least it’s equally usable/fast whether you need a simple click or a complex polyrhythm. PolyNome is not worth using unless you’re doing something complex, and have the time to program it.
Hi,Thanks for leaving a review. I appreciate the feedback. I’d like to clarify a few things.- Nobody should have had to pay for Pro a second time. It’s a once only purchase. Please email me at joe@polynome.net if you feel like you’ve been charged twice. - When you load PolyNome it has a basic quarter note click as the default. You can hit play and you have a regular metronome. You can also use the faders in the mixer to add in 8th notes or 16th notes like a Dr Beat. If you’ve lost that default you can tap the disk button in the top right to load it and then again to reset it. - There’s an option in preferences that will load the default when you reopen the app (instead of loading whatever you were last working on). If you use that it’ll always be ready to play a regular click when you launch. - The inbox allows me to notify you of updates, and send free presets, etc. I’m sorry you find it annoying. I would genuinely love to speak to you on Skype to find out what kind of things you’d like to do, and how I can help you do them more easily, or tweak future versions of the app to make it more useable. Please email me at joe@polynome.net if you’d be happy to chat. All the best,Joe
