PressReader: News & Magazines
Ratings & Reviews
PressReader delivers what most aggregators promise but few achieve: genuine breadth without chaos. The app pulls from outlets across the political spectrum and presents them side by side, often on the same story. This matters. Reading a single account of an event creates the illusion of complete understanding; reading three or four exposes the gaps, the framing choices, and the facts that didn't make every cut. PressReader makes that comparison effortless rather than burdensome. The interface stays out of the way. Stories are organized by topic, not algorithm-driven outrage, and the source labeling is clear enough that you always know whose lens you're looking through. Load times are fast, and the offline reading mode is a genuine convenience for travel. For anyone who wants to stay informed without retreating into a single outlet's worldview, this is a strong tool. Five stars.
Developer ResponseThank you for the 5 stars!
I prefer reading a whole magazine/newspaper vs individual articles, and when I heard about this app, I thought it’d suit my preferences nicely. So I was dismayed to find out that the app would only work well on one device. Since the default subscription does not cover all publications, I have to purchase e.g. the Economist separately. When I try to access them on another device however, the app does not recognize that I’ve purchased them, instead requiring me to pay for them again. And there is no syncing your library across devices, nor is the search function very effective as it seems to hide/show certain publications at random without telling you transparently regional availability on any of them. When I contacted PressReader support on the issue, the rep seemed more oblivious than I was about how the app works, yet despite his negligence, he responded at first to my concerns as if I were a total idiot. It’s appalling that such a popular platform has not had a simple library syncing feature figured out. That alone would only be annoying, but my experience with the app is made so much worse by the incompetent support.

Well, I got to try out the app a few months earlier and I loved the idea that I can read newspaper from around the world with just one subscription. This IS revolutionary. Some might say getting news from the newspaper's site is about the same, but I would say otherwise. You get to read some extra columns & editorials that weren't included on the web edition along with advertisements and classifieds (very good indicator of what's going on in the community). Keep up the good work. I know it's a long shot, but I hope to see FT, NY Times and WSJ in the blend in the future.** Update 1 : I'm somewhat disappointed with the "AutoDelivery" feature. Ideally, the app should start download new newspaper as soon as it's available. However, due to limitation of an iOS, PressDirect must be launched manually in order for it to start downloading. So you can't actually grab your iPad and go in the morning. You have to actually launch the app and wait for everything to be downloaded, otherwise you'll have to use your 3G quota while you're on the way.
My premium subscription to PressReader is the best investment I can think of that I've made in the past several years. Full access to over 7000 newspapers and magazines. Personally, I restrict my newspapers to those in the Spanish language, and there are dozens and dozens of them--- so many that each day I can decide which Hispanic country's newspaper I wish to read that day. My only minor frustration is that on the iPad where I use PressReader it does not show the country of origin of each Spanish language newspaper. But it does show the country of origin in the iPhone version of PressReader. So I use the iPhone version to determine the country of origin and then I read the newspaper itself on my iPad. The reason PressReader is an absolutely "must have" app is because I can put my finger on the textual version of any Spanish language newspaper, and Google translate pops up and gives me a great translation. In addition, PressReader has a computerized female voice that will read newspaper articles to me in Spanish if I choose.
We now travel extensively and really wanted a way to keep up with the two local newspapers we had subscribed to in print form for nearly 40 years. The more major of the two - the state's leading newspaper, had an app that works great and allowed us to subscribe to their digital version. Our smaller hometown paper, however, had no such app and their online version was poor at best. Enter Press Reader - and not only do we get an exact rendition of the daily paper, but at an annual price well below the annual subscription to the print version. It works great and let's us keep up with happenings at home.My only complaint is with my hometown paper itself - Press Reader can only provide whatever the paper's publisher gives them, and alas, that does not include the Sunday Funnies. But that's not Press Reader's fault. And - the one time I sought tech support, I got a prompt & courteous reply. All in all , this is one of my favorite & most used apps!!!
A fantastic deal and a must for travelers. Get the real-meal, full-meal deal from papers around the world: all in one app, all easy to read. The presentation of "just as it is" newspapers from cities everywhere is easy to read thanks to to zooming, clear text treatments, excellent tap-go page links and more. It is like having a huge stack of real newspapers without any of the fuss or muss. I love the tie in with Evernote, which is how I got turned onto the app in the first place. OK, the subscription is bit pricey. But it is about the same as a subscription to a daily, and you get literally 100s to read. I can also add that the customer service is not bad at all. After getting through some initial filtering, I got useful feedback and solutions. All in all, the app and subscription is totally worth it!!! If there is a negative it's this: I wish they had done more promotion sooner. How will get all that lost news back?
An update: I am sick of the same issues below continuing to recur, the inability of Pressreader to fix them and, in the latest go round, of having another entity - Press+ - being pointed to so the two companies can blame each other. If Pressreader worked, it would be great. Now, it just asks me to pay for something I should have paid for. Horrible customer service on birth counts. Been using Press Reader through a number of versions, a great way to read newspapers without dealing with recycling and piling up old issues. I find I read more than I used to. Under the hood have discovered 2 issues. Even though I keep at most a week's worth before deleting, Press Reader has been chewing up memory to the point where iOS8 s,as it is using up 6 GB! That's just impossible. Which led me to discover the second issue - reporting a problem through the app doesn't work any more - it zips a log file and then reports it needs email set up to send. Email on my iPad is set up, and I find nothing in the app for setting email other than the account used to register my newspapers. Really irritating got both counts!
You can see the page in its original format for fast scanning and move quickly from page. When desired you can enlarge the page to see the pictures in their full glory. Or you can click on a story and see it in its own text window, with enlarged text size if desired. You can move from page to page by swiping or by touching an arrow. You can bring up a ribbon at the page bottom that makes it easy to jump from section to section. The paper arrives by 4 am, and you have it with you all day, or for weeks if desired. It's especially useful if you're away from home, and want the details about what's happening on the home front (such as when your town is hit with an earthquake and a hurricane like happened last week.Go for it!HTDEDIT: Sometimes we have had trouble with downloading the Inquirer. I had thought that it was probably due to high download traffic at the Inquirer site, but I now believe it's due to not keeping our first generation iPod clean and lean. I'm going to do a reset, and clean out all read copies, and see if this solves the problem. I'll report back.It did improve things for a while, but today PressReader has frozen three times. If an iPad is approaching the point where this program is going to stop, PressReader should give a warning, and make suggestions on what to do about it. I'm lowering my rating to two stars until something is done.
I love the fact that this app will quickly download the print version of the Washington Post to my iPad (Washington Post subscription is required). The downloaded version is sharp and easy to read. You can easily expand and shrink the text, and maneuver around the page. It is very easy to quickly navigate from one section of the paper to others, and, when an article continues on another page, there is a hot-link to take you to the remainder of the article. You can also view articles in their entirety in a very readable "text view". The program allows you to share articles via email or social media. The only problem I have experienced is that some days the paper does not download; I assume that this is more of a Washington Post problem than a PressReader problem. If you like to read your newspaper on your iPad, but in the traditional format, I highly recommend PressReader
First... When I 'can' download the Appeal Democrat to Press Reader, it is a very enjoyable reading experience! However, the Appeal needs to work with Press Reader to resolve some technical problems before I can justify giving a higher rating. I've used the Press Reader for about 1-1/2 years. I've been an Appeal Democrat subscriber for about 20 years.I pay for a one year subscription for my newspaper. Unfortunately, for no rhyme or reason... at least once within every 5 days, my newspaper does not download. It can take up to 4 days to get all 4 days to finally, magically download. I have to jump through hoops to get this accomplished. I go back and forth between signing in at the newspaper site then back over to the Press Reader site. I usually get a 'pop-up' that says something about 'your subscription is expired'. (Remember I pay yearly!) I've grown to despise that pop up.So, until I can get my paper daily, I can't give Press Reader a higher rating. ☹️
