ProtonVPN’s mission is to make advanced online privacy and security available to everyone. With ProtonVPN, you can:
- Protect your privacy by hiding your IP address
- Browse the web securely (even on public WiFi)
- Unblock censored websites

ProtonVPN is a community-supported VPN developed by the same team of scientists that created ProtonMail, the world’s largest encrypted email service. ProtonVPN has a free plan so anybody can use it. You can upgrade to a paid plan to unlock all features.

Why ProtonVPN?

ProtonVPN is a no logs VPN service. We do not track or record your Internet activity, and therefore, cannot disclose this information to third parties.

Our VPN app for iOS uses the IKEv2 protocol. We use only the highest-strength encryption to protect your Internet connection. This means all your network traffic is encrypted with AES-256 and uses 2048-bit RSA key exchange.

ProtonVPN uses ciphers with Perfect Forward Secrecy, meaning your encrypted traffic cannot be captured and decrypted later, even if an encryption key gets compromised in the future.

ProtonVPN is a Swiss company, which means you are protected by some of the strongest privacy regulations in the world.

Unlike other VPN services, we provide full transparency so you know who is running the service. Whether it is challenging governments, educating the public, or training journalists, we are well known for fighting for privacy online and contributing to the open source community.

ProtonVPN is the ONLY free VPN service that has no privacy invading ads, no malware, no bandwidth limits, and does not secretly sell user data. The free service is supported by optional paid plans that come with more servers and more features.

Paid ProtonVPN plans come with additional features, such as:

ProtonVPN has hundreds of servers located all around the world, accessible via a single click. All servers are on high speed 1 Gbit or 10 Gbit connections. Free users can only access slower servers in 3 countries.

Regular VPN services can be compromised if their servers are under surveillance. ProtonVPN prevents this by first passing user traffic through our Secure Core network in privacy-friendly countries like Switzerland and Iceland. Thus, even a compromised VPN endpoint server will not reveal your true IP address. Secure Core is available for ProtonVPN Plus & ProtonVPN Visionary users.

ProtonVPN Plus & ProtonVPN Visionary include Tor support. With a single click, you can route all your traffic through the Tor network and access Onion sites.

What the world is saying about ProtonVPN

" It’s worth noting here that ProtonVPN’s free service doesn’t implement data limitations or other caps, as some providers do" -- VentureBeat

" ProtonVPN looks to have an admirable goal of bringing an open, private internet to all. " -- CNET

" The service, developed by MIT and CERN, promises to route all traffic through privacy-friendly countries ... a great option for those who are looking for a secure VPN option, developed by reputable people." --LifeHacker

Constant failure to reconnect

Similar issue to ‘randomuntakennickname.’

Message “ Connection Error” “ A previous VPN connection is preventing you from creating a new one. To resolve this issue, please restart your device.”

This typically, and now constantly appears after a device has momentarily dropped a (reliable) WiFi connection due to screen time-out setting or other reason. Attempting to remedy the issue than restart, such as logout and re-login or even app delete and reinstall does not resolve the issue. Unwillingness to restart a device means the VPN’s ordinary functioning is rendered inoperative.

It is unclear how or why this issue has resolved, but the using P-VPN with iOS 12.4 on a iPhone 7 Plus has begun reconnecting without snags again. There was no change in the WiFi networks used, which do not block or prohibit VPNs, and 4G-LTE use was not affected, although the app was deleted, then reinstalled.(Same version.) I cannot complain as a user of the free version.

Unacceptably bad

UPDATE: I’ve been using the free “Plus” trial for a week. This is the 4th time in the last 8 hours the VPN has turned itself off and disconnected my WiFi, leaving me to fiddle with both in order to properly reconnect. I’ve read the reviews on here - this has been an ongoing issue with smartphones for at least a YEAR!? Clearly the developers don’t find leaving even paying customers vulnerable to exploits a problem, and have no intention to fix this issue! As expensive as this product is, absolute fail!

Just ok. Often much slower than expected, and I have to interrupt my work more often than I like to try to find the “right” connection. To be fair, this could be because the building-wide wifi gets a bit slow from time to time to begin with. Not as slow as nord vpn, less sketchy than bitdefender, and I haven’t been blocked from any sites for being on a vpn like cyber ghost. In theory Proton should be less likely to have vulnerabilities or be compromised like some of the big names have been or could be, so that is the main sell.

Hello! We are very sorry to hear this. Could you please let us know what kind of an internet connection are you using ( home wifi, public wifi, school wifi, etc)? Is the same happening if you change the network (for example from WiFi to Mobile data)? Please contact us using the Report bug feature available within our application which would also attach your connection logs and we will look into it more closely. If the issue is resolved, we would appreciate it if you consider updating your review.

Starts out great but....

I’ve been using proton vpn both on pc and mobile for quite some time now and I loved it. I was even considering purchasing the full version to support the cause, but I’m glad I didn’t. I had a great experience until about a month ago I find myself CONSTANTLY having to mess around with the app/WiFi/phone settings to get it to work. Nothing else in my surroundings has changed, same WiFi, same phone etc. I never had to do this and recently it has finally become unbearable. Thankfully I am only using it for pleasure and not to save my life like some people in other countries might be. Try it, it might work great for you, but I use a vpn because I want to trust that my security is being taken care of. Sadly, the reliability issues make this app not applicable for me and for others
