Underwhelmed

Maybe it was the hoopla with the epic games purchase, or the massively delayed roll out, but I expected so much more. I use another paid app which also processes in the cloud, but the resulting model is available to export directly to my phone in any format, yet that is hardly the deal breaker. The deal breaker is that with half the amount of images, in WORSE lighting conditions, the other app blows the results from RealityScan out of the water. I mean, so far, I wouldn’t use a single result from this app versus the other, and the one time purchase was clearly worth it. I’m not naming the other app so I don’t come across as some paid shill, which should tell you everything you need to know. This app needs serious work. The cropping alone is insufficient, which requires that the ground be included as part of the scan, whereas several other apps allow you to literally erase all parts of the scene/model you do not want and then recenters and orients correctly. That’s a small issue compared to other complaints I have. Please go back to the drawing board and charge if you have to. Look at some of the other photogrammetry apps for inspiration, you desperately need it.

Needs more development…

…especially after being delayed for so many months, this wasn’t the product I was expecting. I’m fine with only Sketchfab integration for a free app, but the photogrammetry algorithms need serious work. I did a test on my YETI water bottle on a bright floor with 50 photos in good lighting conditions, and the resulting mesh had the top and bottom of the bottle but completely left out the middle 60 percent. Also, I don’t know why this is seemingly being limited to only photos. Unleash the LiDAR scanners on the Pro model phones and iPads. Seems like a no-brained and other scanning apps already do it. I’m a devoted fan of Epic, Unreal Engine, RC, and especially Twinmotion, and this initial release of RealityScan is a huge letdown. I really hope you turn this around and really put more thought into the product, because it’s not yet at the level of quality people have come to expect from Epic. I’m giving two stars instead of one because the makings of something great are there, and it needs more thought and building out. Looking forward to seeing you guys bring it.

I LOVE this app and use it for pro stuff

I’m an Unreal Engine Technical Artist who creates new short films and virtual production tools for other real-time creators weekly and this app is absolutely a part of my pipeline. What I scan is never my final product. It’s a fantastic starting point. It’s a scan that’s fast, easy and extremely shareable with others. Whether I’m using it to scan toys and rig them so I can animate them or if I’m scanning a piece of furniture at a store, so I can see what it would look like in my house, I constantly find new uses. I am seeing a lot of bad reviews, but I am not seeing a lot of outside of the box thinkers. This is different. Sure, there are other apps that can scan, but this is just different. I don’t work for epic, nor do I have any special interest to make this look better than the rest but I personally love this app and it’s only going to get better. Congrats on the launch team! I can’t wait to see how it progresses.
